Picture a day as a line with a band around it. Inside the band, things happen and the body handles them: a silence, a late bus, a hard meeting. Outside the band, the alarm takes over and the thinking part goes quiet. Everyone has a band. They are not all the same width.

Resilience as two numbers, not one switch.
People call the ability to handle hard days resilience. It is not a switch a person has or does not. It is two numbers. One is how wide the band is: how much can happen before the alarm takes over. The other is how fast the body comes back inside after it has been pushed out.
The band
++
The return
Resilience is two numbers. Which two?
How wide the band is, and how fast the return.
Right. Width is how much a day can hold before the alarm takes over. Speed is how long the alarm keeps the room once it does. Neither is about feeling less.
How strong a person is, and how little they feel.
Not yet. Feeling less is not in it. A wide band feels the silence and handles it; a fast return feels the alarm and comes back. Neither number measures numbness.
How many bad days, and how long they last.
Not yet. Those are the weather, not the band. The two numbers are about the person reading the day: how much the band holds, and how fast the body returns when it does not.
Load, then restgrows
vsvs
Load, no restwears
A band can get wider, and it works like a muscle. A muscle grows from a load followed by rest: the load tears a little, the rest rebuilds a little more. A load with no rest just tears. Researchers who measure it find that load with no rest leaves a wear on the body that adds up over years.
Set the load of a month and the rest in it. What happens to the band is made up and round, on the muscle rule: load with rest widens it; load without rest narrows it.

A heavy load with plenty of rest. What happens to the band?
It holds. Load and rest cancel out.
Not yet. They do not cancel; they work together. Plenty of rest after a heavy load rebuilds more than was torn, which is how a band gets wider, and a muscle too.
It widens most. The load tears and the rest rebuilds more than was torn.
Right. The widening comes from the pair, not from either alone. A heavy load with plenty of rest is the muscle's best month, and the band's too.
It narrows, because heavy is heavy.
Not yet. Heavy load is what the growth comes from, when there is rest after it. The narrowing corner is heavy load with little rest, where the tearing never gets repaired.
Move both controls.

How far outside the band, made up: pushed out at nine, back by lunch.
The second number, the speed of return, is the three clocks from the last chapter and the brake with them. A fast return is not never being pushed out of the band. It is being pushed out at nine and back inside by lunch. Everyone gets pushed out. The number is the return.
Each is something true about a person. Is it about the width of their band, or their speed of return?
One card at a time. Tap the pile it belongs to.
Card 1 of 6
A silence and a late bus in one morning, and still fine.
Shaken by the meeting, settled by lunch.
Three bad things, then the alarm took over.
Still shaken by the meeting at bedtime.
Handles a harsh comment that would have floored them last year.
Shaking hands that stop within the hour.
A silence and a late bus in one morning, and still fine. → Width
Not yet. Width. Two things went in and the alarm did not take over; the band held both.
Shaken by the meeting, settled by lunch. → Speed of return
Not yet. Speed. The band was passed, the alarm had the room, and the body was back inside in a couple of hours.
Three bad things, then the alarm took over. → Width
Not yet. Width, at its edge. The count says where the band ends for this person: three in a day was past it.
Still shaken by the meeting at bedtime. → Speed of return
Not yet. Speed, slow this time. Another body left the meeting behind by lunch. This one is still holding it at night.
Handles a harsh comment that would have floored them last year. → Width
Not yet. Width, grown. The same comment is now inside the band when a year ago it was outside; the band got wider.
Shaking hands that stop within the hour. → Speed of return
Not yet. Speed. The hands are the fast clock finishing; how soon they stop is a measure of the return.

3Speed of return
Right. Width is how much goes in before the alarm takes over. Speed is how long the alarm has the room once it does. A person can be narrow and fast, or wide and slow; the two numbers are separate.

Speedstill there
This is why a bad day is not a verdict on a person. Being pushed out of the band by a boss's silence says the day was heavy for the band it met. The two numbers are both still there on Tuesday, and one of them, the width, is still growing from Monday's load and Monday's rest.

A worse shifthandled
A nurse has a hard shift, sleeps well, has a day off, and next week handles a worse shift without the alarm taking over. Which number changed?
The width. A load followed by rest widened the band, like a muscle.
Right. The worse shift went in and the alarm did not take over, which is a wider band. The hard shift was the load; the sleep and the day off were the rest.
The speed. They got faster at calming down.
Not yet. The speed of return is how fast the alarm settles once the band is passed. Here the band was not passed at all on the worse shift, which is a change in width.
Neither; the second shift was easier.
Not yet. The second shift was worse, by the story. Same person, bigger load, no alarm takeover: that is the band being wider than the week before.
Lesson complete
Resilience is a band and a speed: how much a day can hold, and how fast the body comes back.
