In both, your body is not reacting to something that happened. It is acting on a guess about what its own next move will cause. The brace comes before the shift in weight. The tickle is cancelled before you feel it. The body has run ahead of the moment and placed its bet.
Why a guess beats the truth
The reason is lag. Nerves are not instant. Feeling a real disturbance, sending the signal up, deciding, sending a correction back down, that whole loop takes a tenth of a second or more. For staying upright, that is an eternity. By the time the honest report arrives, you have already begun to fall.
So the nervous system stops waiting for the report. It acts on a forecast of what its own command will do, and corrects the forecast later if it was wrong. Anything that has to move faster than its own feedback works this way. A driver turns into a bend before feeling the car drift. You flinch before the ball reaches your face. Waiting to be sure is a luxury for slow decisions. Fast ones are made on prediction.
The forecast poses as the world
Here is the strange part. You never experience the forecast. You experience its result, and it arrives feeling exactly like the plain, raw world.
When your brain issues a command, it sends a copy of that command inward, a private note that says: here is what you are about to feel. Then it quietly subtracts that expected feeling from what actually reaches you. What is left over is surprise, the part the forecast did not predict. That leftover is what you notice.
So the smooth, stable scene in front of you is not a camera feed. It is a construction, stitched from a prediction your brain already made and the small corrections where the prediction missed. It feels like a window onto reality. It is closer to a draft the brain keeps updating. The seam does not show, which is exactly why it fools you.
You cannot get behind it
You live inside this forecast, and you cannot step around it to check the original.
You have felt the miss. Climb a stalled escalator and your legs lurch, because your body pre-paid for a motion that never came.
