Two machines, one voice
Your voice box has one job. It turns steady air from your lungs into a buzz.
That buzz carries a pitch and a loudness and almost nothing else. Everything
above it - throat, tongue, jaw, lips - is a tube you reshape while you talk, and
that tube works as a filter. It lets some frequencies through loudly and damps
the rest, and the peaks it passes are what separate one vowel from another
Take the source out, and the words stay
The clearest evidence is surgical. After a total laryngectomy the voice box is
gone. Cleveland Clinic lists three routes back to speech. A small prosthesis lets
lung air into the throat. A device held against the neck vibrates. Or air is
swallowed and released back up
The reverse case is dysarthria. Here the nerves running the tongue, lips and jaw
are damaged. The voice box may be perfectly intact, and speech still becomes hard
to follow

What the split hides
Two honest limits. First, the two stages are not sealed off from each other. The
clean split is a model, and researchers can measure the source and the tube
pulling on one another in ordinary connected speech

The catch
The two stages are not sealed off from each other, and the replaceable one is not carrying nothing - pitch is where a question, a mood and a person live.

Someone with no voice box is talking to you
They had a total laryngectomy. The larynx is gone, along with the two folds of tissue everyone calls the vocal cords. There is a small prosthesis routing air from the lungs into the throat, or a device buzzing against the neck, or air swallowed and pushed back up. And you can understand every word.
That should be surprising, and it is only surprising because of what we call things. The voice box. The vocal cords. Both names put your voice in the one place your voice is not.
Two stages, and we named the wrong one
Speaking runs in two stages. The first makes a sound: steady air from the lungs is chopped into a buzz. That buzz has a pitch and a loudness. It has no words in it at all.
The second stage is the tube the buzz travels through on the way out - throat, tongue, jaw, lips, the space behind your nose. You reshape that tube constantly while you speak, and its shape decides which frequencies get out loudly and which are held back. That is what makes an ee an ee. Every word you have ever said was made there.
The first stage is loud, muscular, and easy to point at. The second is a shape in the dark. So the first got the name.
The pattern
Once you have seen it, the shape turns up everywhere. A system has a stage that supplies the power and a stage that supplies the meaning, and they are not the same stage. The power stage is usually the noisy one, usually the one that carries the brand, and usually the one you can swap out. The meaning stage is quiet, and it is the one that actually cannot be replaced.
A record player will run on almost any motor. The music is in the groove. A press supplies force; the type supplies the words. Coal, wind and nuclear all arrive at your wall as the same current, and what happens next is decided at the kettle.
The practical cost of getting this backwards is that you spend your effort in the wrong place. In a loud room, the reflex is to drive the source harder. That is where a lot of rough, tired, painful voices come from: the muscles around the voice box gripping, with perfectly healthy tissue underneath. When researchers asked people to speak so someone hard of hearing could follow them, what changed most was not how hard they pushed. It was how wide they opened the shapes.
Who this reaches
It reaches teachers, who talk for a living into rooms built to swallow sound. It reaches call handlers, singers, anyone whose work is their voice. It reaches people whose nerves have been damaged by a stroke or by Parkinson’s, whose voice box works and whose speech still cannot be followed. And it reaches you in every loud bar, every time your instinct is to push instead of to shape.
There is an arrangement underneath, too, and it is not a villain. Naming the larynx the voice box made it findable. It gave surgeons a target, and they took it - the paralysed cord moved closer to its partner, the tumour removed, the airway held open. Those are real repairs. But a name that points at one half also quietly decides which half people go looking at first, and which half gets called minor.
What the replaceable part was carrying
Here is the humbling part. The stage we can swap turns out not to have been carrying nothing.
Pitch is where the question mark lives, and the joke, and the fear, and the person. The neck device is reliable and quick to learn, and the voice it makes is described as robotic. In interviews with people whose voices had been injured, most of them singers, what they described losing was not the ability to be understood. It was themselves.
And the neat two-stage story is a model, not a wall. Researchers can measure the buzz and the tube pulling on each other in ordinary speech. The split is real enough to hold a surgery together and not clean enough to be the whole truth.
You cannot hear your own tube working. What reaches you comes partly through the bone of your skull, which is why a recording of yourself sounds like a stranger. Everyone you have ever spoken to has heard a version of you that you have never heard. From inside, that is not a thing you can check.
