The twist

Competition is not having several suppliers. It is several suppliers reaching for the same money, and the moment each has its own, they stop being rivals.

The catch

Separate money is not always the wrong choice. It is how you keep more than one supplier alive when a real fight would leave you with none.

And the whole of it

Taxpayers in Germany, Spain, Norway, Austria and the UK are each paying for their own entrant, and none of them picked the others. Most of us sit inside arrangements like that, seeing our own share clearly and the shape of the whole not at all.
