Picture a person walking past a bakery. They were not hungry. The smell reaches them, and now they want bread. Nothing inside them changed in that second. A cue arrived from outside, and a want arrived with it.

From a cuea red badge
A want can start inside: hunger after a long morning, thirst after running. Or it can be put there by a cue: a smell, a red badge on an app, a photo of a friend's new shoes. Both feel the same from the inside. The difference is where they came from. Call the second kind a made want.

A readernow wants to look
A person is reading when their phone shows a red badge with a 3 on it. They want to open it. Where did that want come from?
From the cue. A second ago it was not there; the badge arrived and the want arrived with it.
Right. The person's body did not change in that second. The red badge did the work the bakery smell did.
From nowhere. Wants just happen.
Not yet. This one has a visible start: a badge appeared. A want with a clear outside start is a made want, and that is the whole distinction.
From inside. People naturally want to know what their friends said.
Not yet. Wanting to hear from friends is real, but it did not arrive this second. The badge timed it, and the timing is the clue.

NoneToo much
The shape, not a measurement: liking rises with sugar, peaks, then falls.
Some cues are tuned. Howard Moskowitz, a market researcher, measured for food companies how much sugar, salt or fat makes people like a product most. He called that level the bliss point. Below it, more sugar makes people like it more; above it, less. A snack at the bliss point is a cue in itself.

A feedtuned
A feed is tuned the same way. Which posts keep people looking is measured, and more of those are shown. The bakery smell was an accident of baking. A snack at the bliss point and a feed are not accidents. Both are cues tuned by measuring what people reach for.
Each card is a want. Was it there before any cue, or did it arrive with one?
One card at a time. Tap the pile it belongs to.
Card 1 of 6
Thirst after an hour of football
Wanting a drink the moment an advert for one appears at half time
Wanting to see what a friend replied, right after the phone buzzed
Wanting to finish a book you have been reading for a week
Wanting the trainers everyone on your feed wore this week
Wanting to sleep after a long day
Thirst after an hour of football → There before the cue
Not yet. Before. The body made it over an hour; no outside signal timed it.
Wanting a drink the moment an advert for one appears at half time → Arrived with the cue
Not yet. With the cue. A second before the advert the want was not there; the advert timed it.
Wanting to see what a friend replied, right after the phone buzzed → Arrived with the cue
Not yet. With the cue. The buzz timed it. Caring about the friend is real; the want to look now was made by the buzz.
Wanting to finish a book you have been reading for a week → There before the cue
Not yet. Before. No signal timed it; it was there last week and it is there now.
Wanting the trainers everyone on your feed wore this week → Arrived with the cue
Not yet. With the cue. The want appeared with the photos, and the photos timed it.
Wanting to sleep after a long day → There before the cue
Not yet. Before. The day made it, slowly, and nothing outside switched it on.
3Before the cue

3With the cue
Right. Three from inside, three from a cue. The test is timing. A want that appears the second a cue does was made by the cue. A want with no cue at its start is the person's own.

Own wantstays or grows
There is a second test, and it is time. Take the cue away and a made want fades over days, because nothing is feeding it. A want from inside does the opposite: take food away and hunger grows. So a stretch without a thing shows which kind of want it was.
Picture a person whose app is off the phone, so the badge never comes. Move the days and watch two wants: wanting to open the app, and wanting to hear from friends. Made up to show the shape.
Open the app10 strength, made up
Hear from friends10 strength, made up
Days without the cue: Day 0
Day 0, the day the app came off: both wants are strong.
Open the app6 strength, made up
Hear from friends10 strength, made up
Days without the cue: Day 3
Day 3: wanting to open the app has dropped by nearly half. Wanting to hear from friends has not moved.
Open the app2 strength, made up
Hear from friends10 strength, made up
Days without the cue: Day 10
Day 10: the app want is a fifth of what it was. The friends want is where it started.
Open the app1 strength, made up
Hear from friends10 strength, made up
Days without the cue: Day 30
Day 30: the app want is nearly gone.
After thirty days without the badge, which want is left?
Both have faded. Out of sight, out of mind.
Not yet. Only the made want faded. The frames hold the other steady because nothing outside was feeding it in the first place.
Neither. A want is a want.
Not yet. The frames differ by ten times on day thirty. Where a want came from decides what happens to it when the cue stops.
Wanting to hear from friends. Wanting to open the app has nearly gone.
Right. The badge made the app want, and the badge is gone. The friends want was the person's own; it never needed the cue, so losing the cue did not touch it.
Move the control.

A quiet weekfades
A shop sends a text every afternoon: treat yourself, 20% off today only. A customer notices that the wanting arrives with the text, and fades when a week passes with no texts. Using this lesson, what kind of want is it?
Impossible to say. Wants cannot be told apart.
Not yet. This lesson gave two tests: when a want arrives, and what happens when the cue stops. The customer saw both.
A want from inside, because the customer really does enjoy the shop.
Not yet. Enjoying the shop is real and is not the question. The want to buy today arrived with the text and left with it, and that timing is the mark of a cue.
A made want: it arrives with the cue and fades without it.
Right. Timed by the text, gone without it. That is both halves of the test this lesson gave.
Lesson complete
A want that arrives with a cue was made by it; take the cue away and it fades.
