The weakest link decides the chain
Predict where adding quality changes a result and where it does not.
A team has a world-class attack and a defence that concedes constantly. Where does an extra £50m do the most good?
- Yes.Results come from a chain: win the ball, keep it, create, finish, defend the next attack. Improving the strongest link does much less than removing the weakest one.
- Not quite.Adding to an already excellent attack produces the smallest gain, for exactly the reason the last lesson gave: the replacement was already good.
- Not quite.Where quality lands changes how much of it reaches the scoreboard.
A team is a chain, and the chain breaks at its weakest link. Money spent anywhere else buys less than the price tag suggests.

Why did fixing the weakest department improve the others without touching them?
- Yes.In a chain the parts are not independent. The attack was always this good; it just kept having its work cancelled at the other end.
- Not quite.Possible and unmeasurable. The mechanical explanation does not need it.
- Not quite.Their ratings are unchanged in the frames. What changed is how much of their work survived.

Yes.Where a result requires several things in sequence, the worst one caps it. Where a result is one person doing one thing, it does not — which is why individual sports and team sports reward investment so differently.A squad plays 60 matches. Its eleven best players can each start about 40. How many starts must come from outside that eleven?
startsYes.60 × 11 = 660 starts needed; 11 × 40 = 440 available. A third of a season is played by the players nobody talks about when the squad is judged.Why do clubs with brilliant first elevens still lose long seasons to deeper squads?
- Yes.Depth is not a luxury, it is arithmetic. Injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion mean the weakest part of the squad plays a large and unavoidable share of the season.

- Not quite.Unrelated, and often the reverse — deep squads are usually just richer.
