01 Briefing what happened

The Witcher 3 gets a free rebuild 11 years on, and more people play it on Steam at once than ever before

The lead story — what happened

  • CD Projekt Red, the studio that makes The Witcher games, released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered on 29 September. [6] It came out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2. [6]
  • The rebuild is free to everyone who already owns the game. [1][4]
  • Every old edition, from the plain game to the Complete Edition, now becomes one version that includes both of the game's expansions. [4]
  • Within hours, more people were playing it at the same time on Steam than ever before. [1] The old record was 103,329, set in January 2020 when Netflix's Witcher TV series came out. [1][3]
  • Later on Tuesday the count passed 120,000 and was still rising. [2] At nearly 120,000 it was the ninth most-played game on Steam. [3]
  • A month earlier, only about 32,000 people were playing it at the same time. [1] Its 2015 launch peaked at about 92,000, and a 2022 update at about 89,000. [3]
  • People who did not own it could buy the whole game at half price, $24.99 instead of $49.99. [7][2]
  • On Steam the rebuild is not a separate product. [5] It replaces the old game in the store and in players' libraries. [5]
  • It tops Metacritic's list of 2026 releases with a score of 94. [5] Metacritic averages critics' reviews, and this average comes from just eight reviews of the PC version. [5]
  • CD Projekt says it has never changed so much of the game at once, and it rebuilt parts like the skill tree from scratch. [9][8]
  • Eurogamer says the free rebuild is there to warm players up for Songs of the Past, a new expansion due next year. [3][4]
  • On Switch 2, players on Reddit report that the free upgrade only checks for an original Switch cartridge. [6] So one borrowed cartridge can unlock free copies for several people. [6]
The most people playing The Witcher 3 at once on Steam, at five moments since 2015. The free rebuild beat every earlier peak, and the last count was still rising.

Who is involved

  • CD Projekt Red

the studio that makes The Witcher games; it rebuilt its 2015 game and gives the new version free to owners [4]

  • Steam

Valve's PC game store; its public player counts showed the new record [1]

  • SteamDB

a website that tracks how many people play each Steam game; it logged the new peak [1][3]

  • Switch 2 owners with the old cartridge

they get the new version free, and players report that a borrowed cartridge works too [6]

How it unfolded

  1. 2015 The Witcher 3 comes out; its Steam peak is about 92,000 [3]
  2. Jan 2020 Netflix's Witcher show lifts it to 103,329 players at once [1]
  3. 24 Sep 2026 the whole game drops to $24.99, from $49.99 [7]
  4. 29 Sep 2026 the free rebuild comes out and passes 120,000 players at once [2]
  5. 2027 a new expansion, Songs of the Past, is due [4]

Where this points

Watch whether the Steam count keeps climbing into the weekend, as IGN expects, and whether CD Projekt ever gives a player or sales figure from outside Steam. [1]

What is pushing on the whole day

The bar and the word are our reading of how hard each one is pushing today. The arrow is where it is heading. The evidence is in the stories below.

Old games selling again Building↑

The Witcher 3, first sold in 2015, had more players at once on Steam than ever. [2] Every pre-order of Ace Combat 8 comes with a 2006 game that was only ever sold on PlayStation 2. [16] Coffee Stain announced the first paid expansion for its factory game Satisfactory. [30]

Rules for who gets in Building↑

In Japan, Sony lets only accounts with 60 hours of play enter its PS5 Pro lottery. [11] Deadlock, Valve's unreleased team game, still lets new players in only by invite. [14] Ace Combat 8 opened early only for buyers of its $90 edition. [17]

GTA 6's launch date High↑

Kotaku links Japan's rush for the PS5 Pro to GTA 6, which comes out on 19 November. [12][28] Two small games are launching on that same day on purpose. [29] A magazine printed a 14-page preview of GTA 6 on Tuesday. [28]

What a bought game includes Building↑

Two Mexican lawmakers want sellers to say whether a buyer gets a game or only a licence to play it. [24] Xbox now turns discs into digital copies, but a sold disc may take the digital copy with it. [25] Synduality's online servers close in May 2027, and an offline mode replaces them. [26]

The rest of the day

Each with its own sources. None of these is a link to the story above.

  1. 02

Sony draws lots for PS5 Pros in Japan

Sony is holding a lottery to sell the PS5 Pro, the stronger version of its PlayStation 5, on its own online store in Japan. [10] To enter, a buyer needs a Japanese Sony account with at least 60 hours of play on a PS4 or PS5 over the past two years. [11][12] Entries close on 7 October, and winners hear on 26 October. [10] Each winner may buy one console for 137,980 yen, about $876. [10][12]

Why it matters — GameSpot says memory chips are short, so demand is running ahead of supply. [11] It says the 60-hour rule is likely there to keep out resellers, who buy consoles to sell on at a mark-up. [11] Kotaku ties the rush to GTA 6 and notes that the standard PS5 is still in stock. [12]

  2. 03

    Valve's invite-only Deadlock hits a record

Valve, the company that runs the Steam store, put out a big update for Deadlock on Tuesday. [13] Deadlock is a team battle game that Valve has never officially released, and new players still need an invite from someone already playing. [15][14] The update redraws the map and adds six new characters, two a week, in an order players vote on. [14] Soon after it went live, more than 228,000 people were playing at once, the game's highest ever. [13]

Players at once on Steam on 29 September. The bigger crowd was for the game nobody can simply join.

Why it matters — Valve says progression and customisation will keep changing with player feedback before a full release. [13] Its record was almost twice The Witcher 3's on the same day, for a game that still needs an invite to play. [13][2]

  3. 04

A PC bonus drags down Ace Combat 8's Steam score

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, a fighter-jet game from the publisher Bandai Namco, opened on Steam for buyers of its $90 deluxe edition before its 1 October release. [17] Every pre-order includes Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, a 2006 game only ever sold on PlayStation 2. [16] On PS5 and Xbox the old game is a separate app. [16] On Steam it is an add-on, so players must install the new game, 135GB to 150GB by different counts, to play one under 4GB. [16][17]

To play the small bonus game on Steam, a buyer must first install the whole new game. On PS5 and Xbox the old game installs on its own.

Why it matters — The Steam page once said the old game would be separate, and the wording was later changed. [16] Steam reviews sit at Mixed, though critics praised the new game itself and some complaints are about crashes. [17][18]

  4. 05

Naughty Dog has two more Last of Us projects

Neil Druckmann, head of Naughty Dog, the Sony studio that makes The Last of Us, says it has two new projects set in that world. [19][21] Both are in very early stages and will take the story beyond the first two games. [20] He did not say whether they are games, a TV show or something else. [19][20] Its next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, first shown in 2024, gets a full reveal in 2027. [21][22] The Last of Us Day charity stream raised over $11,000 for AbleGamers. [21][23]

Why it matters — The studio worked on an online Last of Us game for years and then cancelled it, so Polygon says there is no guarantee these projects will be seen. [22] Polygon notes that the HBO TV series based on the games ends with its third season in 2027. [23]

  5. 06

Mexican lawmakers propose a digital games law

Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas, who chairs the Mexican Senate's digital rights commission, and federal deputy Irais Reyes are proposing changes to consumer law. [24] Sellers would have to say whether a buyer gets the game itself or only a licence to use it. [24] Buyers would keep some way to play after a game's servers are switched off. [24] Companies selling digital goods in Mexico would also need a Mexican business address, so authorities can act on complaints. [24]

Why it matters — The same two lawmakers filed a competition complaint against Sony after it announced its move away from game discs. [24] For now it is a proposal, which Colosio posted on his Instagram. [24]

  6. 07

    Xbox opens disc-to-digital to everyone

Xbox began letting every player turn a game disc into a digital copy on 29 September, after testing it with volunteers. [25] The player puts the disc in an Xbox Series X or Xbox One and picks Claim digital license, and then no longer needs the disc. [25] A fan-made list counts at least 1,400 games that work, and Sega signed up the same day. [25] Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are left out, and Square Enix is among the publishers not taking part. [25]

Why it matters — Kotaku warns that selling or losing the disc may cost the digital copy, especially if someone else claims it. [25] The move comes as Sony plans to stop making PlayStation game discs in 2028. [25]

  7. 08

Synduality's online world closes in 2027

Bandai Namco will shut the online servers of Synduality: Echo of Ada, a 2025 game where players pilot giant robots and fight monsters and each other for supplies. [26] At its best it barely passed 3,000 players at once on Steam. [26] Online play runs until May 2027, and then the game switches to an offline mode against computer enemies. [26] Its in-game currency stops being sold on 17 December. [26]

Why it matters — People who bought it keep a game they can still play after the servers close. [26] That is the kind of fallback the Mexican proposal would require by law. [24]

  8. 09

Steam's sale pages will pick deals for each shopper

Valve will replace the hand-picked spots in Steam's Discounts and Events section with recommendations chosen for each shopper. [27] Today those spots are booked on a calendar by developers, publishers or Steam itself. [27] In tests, Valve says the personal version showed ten times more games a day and brought more store visits, wishlists and cart additions. [27] Prices stay the same, and the change is due to start in early 2027. [27]

Why it matters — PC Gamer notes that getting seen on Steam is a constant struggle for small developers, and more slots could help them. [27] Its writer also worries that shoppers will see less outside what they already buy. [27]

  9. 10

A magazine prints 14 pages on GTA 6

Game Informer, a games magazine, published a 14-page preview of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Tuesday. [28] Rockstar Games, which makes GTA, has built the new game around a version of Florida. [28] Paul MacPherson, who leads the art of the game's places, suggested Disney World, Orlando and the Cape Canaveral space base will not appear as such. [28] GTA 6 comes out on 19 November on PS5 and Xbox. [28]

Why it matters — MacPherson said the team picked places to suit the game rather than copy every famous spot. [28] Each new detail feeds the run-up to what GamesIndustry.biz calls a fairly safe bet for the biggest game launch ever. [29]

  10. 11

Two small games launch on GTA 6's day

Fairy Mount, a small studio, will release its strategy game Flame, Forest and Flood on 19 November, the day GTA 6 comes out. [29] The indie publisher Devolver Digital is putting out Volvy's Adventure: Reslimed that day too. [29] Devolver's Robbie Patterson points out that GTA 6 is not coming to Steam at launch. [29] Sensor Tower, a research firm, says GTA 6 already has more than 5.6 million pre-orders and estimates more than $550 million in sales. [29]

Why it matters — Analyst Joost van Dreunen told GamesIndustry.biz that any console release that week will largely go unnoticed. [29] Fairy Mount's boss says his game breaks even below 10,000 copies, while GTA 6's budget is reportedly well over $1 billion. [29]

  11. 12

Satisfactory gets its first paid expansion

Coffee Stain, the studio behind the factory-building game Satisfactory, announced an expansion called Core Values on Tuesday. [30] The studio says it is the game's first paid add-on and a major expansion. [30] It takes building underground for the first time, with new resources, plants and animals. [30] It already has a Steam page, and the studio says only that it is coming later. [30]

Why it matters — It is the first time Satisfactory players are asked to pay for new content in the game they already own. [30] PC Gamer's Wes Fenlon, who has about 400 hours in it, says the game takes over his evenings once he starts. [30]

  12. 13

A 34-year-old survival game gets new clothes

UnReal World, a survival game that PC Gamer calls 34 years old, gets a big update in October. [31] It is made by two developers, Sam Maaranen and Erkka Lehmus, of a studio called Enormous Elk. [31] The update, called The Survivor's New Clothes, lets characters make their own clothes over many evenings in the game. [31] Cloth is costly: in one picture from the update notes, a trader will not swap nine feet of linen for a bow, five arrows and a hand axe. [31]

Why it matters — A two-person studio is still adding new features to the game after 34 years. [31] This week, Bandai Namco said its much newer Synduality will lose online play after two years. [26]

02 Lesson why it matters

When the price will not rise, a rule decides who gets one

When more people want something than there is, and the price stays put, the seller has to pick who goes first by a rule.

The twist

When a company will not raise the price of something scarce, it still has to choose who gets it. It chooses with a rule, and the rule decides who wins.

The picture

How Sony picks PS5 Pro buyers in Japan. A rule does the choosing at every step, and the price at the end stays the same.

How it works

  1. More people want a thing than there is to hand out
  2. The seller keeps the price where it is
  3. So the price no longer picks who gets it
  4. The seller writes a rule instead: a draw, hours played, an invite or a dearer edition
  5. The rule picks who gets in, and people change what they do to fit it

The same force, elsewhere today

Where this chain is also running, in today's other stories.

  • Sony draws lots for PS5 Pros in Japan

Sony sells at a fixed 137,980 yen, lets in only accounts with 60 hours of play, then draws names.

  • Valve's invite-only Deadlock hits a record

Valve lets new players in only through an invite from someone already playing, so knowing a player is the rule.

  • A PC bonus drags down Ace Combat 8's Steam score

Bandai Namco gave the first days only to buyers of the $90 edition, so paying for the bigger box is the rule.

  • The Witcher 3 on Switch 2

The rule for the free rebuild is holding an old cartridge, so one borrowed cartridge can unlock copies for several people.

Where you've seen this

Popular schools

a school that cannot charge more picks pupils by distance, brothers and sisters already there, or a draw

Homes at a fixed rent

a waiting list or a ballot decides who moves in, not who would pay the most

Limited trainers

shops run app raffles for a new release, and some people enter many times to beat the draw

The catch

A rule only works while it is hard to get round. On Switch 2, one old cartridge passed from hand to hand already gets round CD Projekt's check.

And the whole of it

Everyone in these stories is living by a rule someone else wrote: the player in Japan counting hours, the friend waiting for an invite, the fan who paid $90 to start early. Each of them sees whether they got in, and none of them sees how many others the same rule turned away.

03 Truth what's really going on

What is really going on

CD Projekt Red gave its 11-year-old game away free to everyone who owns it and put the full game on sale at half price, and on 29 September more people played it at once on Steam than ever before. [4][7][1] On the same day, Sony in Japan, Valve and Bandai Namco each used a rule rather than the price to decide who gets a console or a game first. [11][14][17]

Why it works on us — A record player count sounds like a sales success, but the Steam count includes every owner who got the rebuild free, and no sales figure has been given. [1][4]

Who gains

  • CD Projekt Red — Its 11-year-old game became the ninth most-played on Steam, ahead of a new expansion due next year. [3][4]
  • PlayStation players in Japan who play a lot — Sony's 60-hour rule lets them into the PS5 Pro draw and keeps out buyers with no play history. [11]
  • Devolver Digital — Its marketer says announcing a release on GTA 6's launch day is itself a way to get noticed. [29]
  • Xbox owners with old discs — Discs for at least 1,400 games can now become digital copies without buying the games again. [25]
  • Switch 2 owners who can borrow a cartridge — Players report that one old Witcher 3 cartridge unlocks the free rebuild for several accounts. [6]

Who pays

  • PlayStation buyers in Japan with little play time — Anyone under 60 hours of play since September 2024 cannot enter the PS5 Pro draw at all. [11]
  • Steam buyers of Ace Combat 8 who wanted the bonus game on their own — They must install the new game, 135GB to 150GB by different counts, to play a bonus game under 4GB. [16][17]
  • Synduality players — They lose online play in May 2027, and the in-game currency stops being sold on 17 December. [26]
  • Xbox owners who sell or lose a disc — Kotaku warns the digital copy may go with the disc, especially if someone else claims it. [25]
  • Other console games released in the week of 19 November — An analyst told GamesIndustry.biz that any console release that week will largely go unnoticed. [29]

What nobody knows yet

Open questions from across today’s stories — ours included.

  • 01

How many copies the half-price sale actually sold.

CD Projekt has published no sales figure, and the Steam count mixes new buyers with owners who upgraded for free. [1][7]

  • 02

How many people are playing the rebuild in total.

The counts cover Steam only. PlayStation, Xbox, Switch 2, GOG and the Epic store have given no numbers. [1][3]

  • 03

Exactly how high the Steam record went.

IGN reported 114,696, Eurogamer nearly 120,000 and Kotaku over 120,000, each at a different hour of the same day. [1][3][2]

  • 04

How many PS5 Pros Sony has for the Japanese draw.

Sony says names are drawn only if entries outnumber consoles, and none of the reports says how many consoles there are. [10]

  • 05

Why the Steam wording for Ace Combat 8's bonus game changed.

Eurogamer says it is not clear when the store page was changed, and the reports carry no explanation from Bandai Namco. [16]

  • 06

What Naughty Dog's two new Last of Us projects are.

Neil Druckmann did not say whether they are games, and the studio cancelled an earlier online Last of Us game after years of work. [19][22]

  • 07

    When Deadlock opens to everyone.

Valve gives no release date, and says some features being tested may never ship. [13]

  • 08

How Steam will choose which deals each shopper sees.

Valve has given no details and no firm date, only early 2027. [27]

  • 09

    Whether Mexico's proposal becomes law.

It was announced on a senator's Instagram, and no vote on it is reported. [24]

04 Hope carry this

The Witcher 3's rebuild costs nothing for anyone who already owns the game, and every old edition now includes both of its expansions. On its first day more people played it at once on Steam than ever before.

Also true today

  • Synduality: Echo of Ada loses its online servers in May 2027, and Bandai Namco will replace them with an offline mode so people who bought it can keep playing.
  • Naughty Dog's Last of Us Day raised over $11,000 for the charity AbleGamers.
  • Every Xbox player can now turn discs for at least 1,400 games into digital copies, so the disc no longer has to sit in the console.
