The interest on every shortcut
The cheapest way to move fast is to skip something, and skipping it quietly charges interest until the bill comes due.
A phone company’s most expensive purchase is the one it already made
Somewhere in Europe, a phone company is looking at a bill. Not for something new, but for undoing something old. The network gear it bought from a Chinese supplier years ago was cheap and it worked. Now a security law wants it gone, and tearing it out will cost far more than the original discount ever saved.
That is a strange kind of expense. The company is paying, at great cost, to get back to where it was before it took the deal. And the money it saved a decade ago is long spent.
Every shortcut is a loan
There is a name for this, borrowed from software but true everywhere: technical debt. You take a shortcut to move faster now, and the shortcut works. But it is a loan. And like any loan, it charges interest.
The interest is not money, at first. It is friction. Every time someone works around the shortcut, patches it, or warns a new hire about it, that is a small interest payment. The person who borrows is rarely the one who pays

Each one bought a little speed by borrowing from a version of you that would arrive later. Each one is charging interest right now, in the background, whether or not you can feel it.
The hard thing is that debt is easiest to see in other people. It is nearly invisible in yourself, because from the inside a shortcut just looks like the normal way things are. The European carriers did not feel indebted for ten years. They felt efficient. Right up until the bill.
So the useful humility here is not “avoid all shortcuts.” Sometimes the loan is worth it, and you pay it back on purpose, on your own schedule. The humility is smaller and harder: the confident feeling that you did everything right is exactly the feeling that hides the meter. Somewhere, on something, the interest is still running. It always is.
