The border system that took a decade to fail
Europe’s new biometric border system went live, and the first thing it produced was chaos. Non-EU travelers now give fingerprints and a face scan instead of a passport stamp, logged into one central EU database
The system - the Entry/Exit System, or EES - was planned for years. It was meant to start in 2022, then slipped again and again as Germany, France and the Netherlands reported their border computers were not ready. The EU eventually gave up on switching every border on at once and moved to a slow, phased start from October 2025. Even the cautious version arrived jammed.

The stamp worked
Before this week, the way Europe checked a non-EU traveler was almost embarrassingly simple. An officer looked at a passport, and inked a stamp. It was crude. It missed people. But it worked, every hour of every day, at every crossing on the continent.
This week the EU switched on the thing meant to replace it: fingerprints, a face scan, one shared database, every border tied together. It is a far better idea on paper. And on its first days it produced five-hour lines in Brussels and travelers sleeping on airport floors.
The pattern under the mess
There is a plain rule that fits this, and it is older than the software. A complex system that works is almost always found to have grown out of a simple system that worked. The complex thing designed all at once, from a blank sheet, tends not to work - and, worse, usually cannot be patched into working. You have to go back and start from something simpler that runs.
The reason isn’t laziness or bad engineers. A working simple system has already been beaten against reality. Every case it can’t handle has shown up and been dealt with, one at a time. The stamp survived decades of odd passports, tired officers, and strange edge cases because it met them and adapted. A system drawn on a whiteboard has met none of them. It carries a thousand assumptions nobody has tested, and they fail together on day one.
The tell is in the delays
Watch what the EU actually did, because it tells you they half-knew. This system was meant to launch in 2022. It slipped, and slipped again, as Germany, France and the Netherlands kept saying their border computers were not ready. Then the plan itself changed shape: the EU gave up on switching every border on at the same moment and moved to a slow, phased start.
That retreat is the rule showing through. “Turn it all on at once” is the blank-sheet dream, and it could not be made to hold. So they broke it into smaller, running pieces - which is the only way complexity ever actually arrives. Even then, the launch jammed. Growing a system slowly is not a guarantee; it is just the only thing that sometimes works.

The messy old thing quietly held a decade of hard-won fixes the clean version never learned.

Here is the part that should sit with you, because it reaches past software. The pull toward the blank sheet is not a mistake a few careless people make. It is what almost everyone reaches for. The clean plan is easier to draw, easier to sell, easier to fund than the humble one that says: start with something small that works, and grow it.

The border you waited at, the bank you can’t log into, the government service that stalls - these came from people who wanted, genuinely, to build something better. They drew the whole grand thing at once. The lesson is not that they were fools. It is that the world is more tangled than any single blueprint can hold. No seat - not the planner’s, not the traveler’s, not yours - can see all of it at once. That is a reason to build in small, testable steps, and to hold every grand plan, including your own, a little more loosely.
