How fast a bone rebuilds itself depends on which bone it is. The speed is called the turnover rate
The two kinds of bone turn over at very different speeds. The hard outer shell — cortical bone — is dense and slow. The spongy mesh inside the ends of bones and in the spine — trabecular bone — has far more surface exposed to the crews. It rebuilds much faster

Why constant demolition makes bone stronger, not weaker

Because bone responds to load, the most reliable lever is using it. Research shows strength training can slow bone loss and even build bone, offsetting the age-related decline
Calcium and vitamin D matter, but the story is more careful than the supplement aisle suggests. They are the raw materials, and in people who are genuinely deficient — the frail, the housebound — supplements do reduce fractures. In the general, well-fed population the evidence is far weaker and less consistent
And some of it is just hype. Weighted vests are sold hard online as a way to build bone by walking. The evidence doesn’t match the claims — one study comparing walkers with and without vests found no meaningful difference in bone health
None of this is medical advice, and osteoporosis is a matter for a doctor. But the working picture is worth carrying. Your skeleton is a living thing. It rebuilds itself to fit how you use it, banks the calcium your heart needs, and — with the right loads and materials — largely keeps its own strength up. Over about ten years, you replace most of it. The skeleton holding you up as you read this is not the one you had a decade ago.
The instinct is to hear that as decay — something wearing out, being patched. It is the reverse. The tearing-down is not damage to the bone. It is what keeps the bone from breaking.
Why the constant remaking is the strength
Two things happen when a structure remakes itself.
The first is repair. Every step you take puts tiny cracks in your bones. Left alone, cracks add up, and a thing full of cracks snaps. We keep mistaking the costume for the object. We treat what stands still as strong, and what is forever being torn up and redone as unreliable. For living structures, that reading is backwards. The one that never changes is not the durable one. It is the one that stopped renewing, and is going brittle where you cannot see.
The word we use for it hides the cost
Notice how the language is arranged. We praise things for being “unchanging,” “rock-solid,” “set in stone.” We describe constant remaking as “churn,” “instability,” “never settling down.” One set of words sounds like strength; the other sounds like weakness.
That arrangement is a choice, and it is not neutral. It flatters whatever is old and still, and it treats the ceaseless upkeep that actually holds things together as a lesser, restless thing. But the upkeep is the load-bearing part. The institution admired for never changing is often the one quietly cracking. The relationship that “doesn’t need work” is often the one going hollow. Calling stillness strength lets us stop paying the maintenance, right up until the thing snaps — and then we are surprised, because it looked so solid.

It is tempting to read all this as a fact about bones, or about other people’s institutions. It is a fact about you, right now.
You are not a fixed thing moving through a changing world. You are yourself one of these flowing structures. As you read this sentence, the crews are working — dissolving, rebuilding, deciding which parts of you to reinforce and which to let go. You feel continuous. Underneath, you are being remade by cells you will never meet, following signals you never issue on purpose. The permanence you feel is not the absence of change. It is change, running so steadily and so well that it feels like stillness.
And the bill is yours. A part of yourself you stop asking to carry weight, your body carries away — not out of malice, out of thrift. What you don’t use, you don’t keep.
What the whole thing leaves you holding
The lesson is not “keep everything moving,” and it is not “change is always good.” Plenty of change is loss. It is smaller and stranger than that. The things you most want to trust as finished and safe — your body, your skills, the bonds and institutions you stand on — are not finished at all. The solidity you count on is on loan, kept up by maintenance you mostly don’t notice and can’t fully see. Treat it as alive, and it tends to hold. Treat it as finished, and it goes brittle exactly where you stopped looking.
