The lead story — what happened

  • A memory is not a file the brain opens and closes unchanged. Bringing one up can knock it back into an unstable state, and it then has to be stored again - a process researchers call reconsolidation. [1][2]
  • It does not reopen every time you think of it. It opens mainly when something breaks the expectation the memory carries, and dopamine, the brain chemical tied to surprise and reward, is one of the signals that unlocks it. [1]
  • The resistance has a name in the literature: boundary conditions. They stop a memory being edited by every ordinary recall, which is why the reviewers call some traces modification-resistant. [1]
  • Once it is open there is a defined window after the recall in which it can be changed. In rats, a drug called ADX71743 wiped out a learned fear only when the animal was made to recall it first, and only inside that window. [4]
  • The animal results are strong and the human results are not. In the biggest human test here, 78 adolescents with and without long-term pain had one threat memory reawakened before it was unlearned; the wiring between two brain regions shifted as predicted and the fear they reported did not move. [3]
  • The idea is being aimed at habits as well as fear. Fifty-seven smokers were split in two, and the 29 who spent five minutes picturing themselves smoking before an hour of unlearning reported weaker craving and a fainter mental picture of smoking after the session. [6]
  • The everyday version runs on the same opening. Shown misleading accounts of something they had watched, people later report the false detail as their own memory, and 30 adults aged about 70 did it more often than 30 aged about 23. [19]
  • Retrieval also strengthens. Pulling a fact out of your head fixes it better than reading it again - the testing effect - which is the same opening used to keep rather than to change. [47][48]
  • Feeling is remembered worst. Among 769 people asked about 11 September 2001 and 726 asked about the Covid-19 pandemic, the emotions recalled were more intense than the emotions reported at the time. [16]
  • The human evidence is mixed and unfinished, and every treatment described here is one a doctor or therapist prescribes and supervises. [32][40]

  1. 02

    An antibiotic tested on trauma memory, and nothing moved

    Researchers gave 78 women either doxycycline, a common antibiotic, or a dummy pill before showing them a film of violent scenes - a standard laboratory stand-in for trauma. The drug blocks an enzyme thought to help fix a memory in place, so the prediction was fewer unwanted flashbacks over the following week. Thirty-nine women took each. The groups did not differ in how often the film came back, how vivid it was, or how much it upset them. [10]

    Why it matters — The analysis was locked in before the results were seen, so this null finding is hard to explain away. Most human trials in this field have come out the same way.

    EMDR worked as well without the eye movements

    EMDR is listed as an established trauma treatment by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and everyone knows it by the moving finger the patient follows. Fifty healthy volunteers recalled a distressing personal memory; half did the standard eye movements, half did a Posner task, in which attention shifts across a screen while the eyes stay still. Distress fell by the same amount in both groups. [36][30]

    Why it matters — The authors conclude that shifting attention, not moving the eyes, is what does the work. That would mean the part the therapy is named after is not the part that treats anyone.

    EMDR matched the standard therapy in children

    A systematic review pooled trials of EMDR in children and adolescents with post-traumatic stress. Against a waiting list or usual care it produced a large drop in symptoms. Against trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, which most guidelines put first, it showed no significant difference on clinical outcomes. The reviewers say the trials are still too few and too small to settle it, and that almost nobody has measured what either treatment costs. [31]

    Why it matters — Two treatments that work equally well are not interchangeable in a clinic: one has far more trained therapists behind it, and the review says the cost comparison that would decide between them has not been done.

    A map of what trauma therapy has actually been tested on

    A scoping review sorted the evidence on psychotherapy for trauma-related distress. EMDR and cognitive behavioural therapy are the most studied and the most consistently effective. Prolonged exposure and narrative exposure therapy look promising and are thinly researched. For complex trauma - violence from a partner, the death of a child - psychodynamic approaches showed effects in cases where EMDR and CBT often do less well, and are barely studied at all. [32]

    Why it matters — The therapies with the best evidence are not the ones that reach every kind of trauma, and the gap sits over exactly the hardest cases.

    Rewriting the picture instead of sitting with it

    Imagery rescripting asks a person to bring a traumatic memory to mind and then deliberately change what happens inside the image - an adult self walking into a childhood scene, for instance. A systematic review found 24 studies in adults with post-traumatic stress or its complex form. Across randomised trials, clinical studies and single-case designs, trauma symptoms fell consistently. The reviewers say the reason it works is still not established. [33]

    Why it matters — It is the day's mechanism performed on purpose: open the memory, put something new inside it, let it close. It lands on people for whom simply retelling the event has not worked.

    When EMDR stalls, therapists add rescripting

    Two case reports describe what happens when the first-line treatment does not finish the job. A 25-year-old Dutch man with post-traumatic stress from childhood sexual and physical abuse had 30 sessions: five of education, four of EMDR, five of imagery rescripting, then five more of EMDR. A second case ran to 50 sessions combining schema therapy, rescripting and EMDR, with relapse prevention at the end. Both reported substantial improvement. [34][35]

    Why it matters — Single cases prove nothing by themselves. They show the real shape of treatment after childhood abuse: dozens of sessions, several methods stacked, and no clean protocol to follow.

    Ketamine added to eye-movement therapy, in eight people

    A clinic combined low-dose ketamine under the tongue - an anaesthetic now used at small doses in psychiatry - with EMDR. Eight people with post-traumatic stress took part, average age 41, none of whom had taken ketamine before. Their symptom scores fell from an average of 15.5 to 9.9, and their difficulty functioning fell too. The authors applied a small-sample correction and describe the result as preliminary. [37]

    Why it matters — Eight people cannot show that a treatment works. It shows where the attention is going: pairing a drug with a therapy whose whole method is to reopen the memory.

    Trauma therapy offered to intensive-care survivors

    The EMERALD study at University Hospital Southampton in England tested whether people who survive critical illness and are left with frightening memories of intensive care can be found, offered EMDR, and kept in treatment. Its chief investigator, Andrew Bates, says patients often report that nightmares and anxiety persist long after they have physically recovered, on top of a hard physical recovery. The study reports that identifying and engaging those patients is possible. [38]

    Why it matters — Intensive care leaves behind a group nobody was routinely screening for. This is the step between knowing that and doing anything about it.

    Forty-one finished drug trials for post-traumatic stress

    Researchers searched ClinicalTrials.gov, the public register of medical trials, for every completed late-stage drug trial in post-traumatic stress with results posted, up to June 2025. They found 41, and sorted them by drug class and by what each measured. A separate review sets out what is offered when standard therapy does not reach someone: deep brain reorienting, virtual-reality therapy, neurofeedback and non-invasive brain stimulation. [40][39]

    Why it matters — Forty-one is a small number for a condition this common, and it is part of why an unproven memory-editing idea keeps drawing serious researchers.

    Fourteen women, six sessions, no control group

    A pilot study across several centres gave six sessions of reconsolidation therapy - reactivating the traumatic memory while taking propranolol, an old blood-pressure drug - to women with both fibromyalgia, a long-term pain condition, and post-traumatic stress. Fourteen completed treatment and a three-month follow-up. Scores for pain impact, trauma symptoms and depression all moved. The authors stress there was no comparison group and call for larger controlled trials. [8]

    Why it matters — The idea is being tried on pain, not only on fear, on the theory that the two share machinery. Fourteen people with nothing to compare against cannot tell you whether it worked.

    Propranolol, a heart drug read as a brain drug

    Propranolol has long been used against high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats. It works by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors, the ones that respond to adrenaline. A review argues its value in the brain - in post-traumatic stress, memory problems, anxiety, migraine prevention and tremor - is being re-examined receptor by receptor. In mice, a single injection before a stressful social defeat was tested to see whether it could stop that defeat leaving them highly vulnerable to a later, milder stress. [9][71]

    Why it matters — Propranolol is the drug most of the reconsolidation therapies use, and it is cheap and long off patent, which shapes who funds trials of it.

    The idea tested on low mood, in sixty people

    Sixty volunteers, average age 26, were made to feel helpless on day one using anagrams that could not be solved. On day two they were split three ways: one group succeeded throughout, one briefly failed again before succeeding, and one kept failing. The middle group is the reconsolidation condition - the memory is reopened by a small failure and then contradicted. On day three the helplessness task returned. [7]

    Why it matters — It is the first experimental attempt to point memory reopening at depression, which comes back in a way current treatments do not prevent.

    Smokers who pictured smoking first

    Fifty-seven people dependent on nicotine were split into two groups. Twenty-nine listened to a five-minute script that had them imagine themselves smoking, rested for ten minutes, then did an hour of unlearning training; twenty-eight did the training without the imagining. The group that recalled first reported weaker craving and a fainter mental picture of smoking, and the drop in vividness tracked the drop in craving. Follow-ups ran out to twelve months. [6]

    Why it matters — A craving is a memory being retrieved. If it can be reopened it can in principle be edited, and the design here is the same one being tried on trauma.

    The pathway a drug memory runs through

    Mice were taught to associate a chamber with cocaine, a standard way of building a drug memory tied to a place. Researchers then used a technique that switches off chosen neurons chemically, silencing either cells in the nucleus accumbens - a reward centre - or the cells reaching it from the ventral hippocampus, a memory region. Silencing them after the memory was reactivated stopped it being stored again. [5]

    Why it matters — It names the wiring that has to be running for a drug memory to survive being recalled, which is what any anti-relapse drug would have to reach.

    Two fly experiments, one false memory

    Fruit flies were trained to avoid a smell, then left until they behaved as though they had forgotten it. The memory was still there as a silent trace in neurons that no longer drove behaviour, and a reminder brought it back. When researchers altered the reminder, the flies came back holding a memory of something that had not happened. Separately, giving a fly sugar alone, with no smell attached, weakened several existing smell-and-reward memories at once. [11][12]

    Why it matters — The same reminder that recovers a lost memory can plant a false one. Fruit flies do both, so neither step needs a human brain.

    Half the connections gone, the memory stayed

    Mice were given a mild foot shock in a chamber that smelled of alcohol, so they froze on being returned to it. Researchers then put about half of them into an artificial hibernation for two days using drugs that slow the body down. Five days later those mice still froze - even though more than half the connections on the memory-carrying neurons in their hippocampus had vanished. The tightly clustered connections were the ones that survived. [13]

    Why it matters — It cuts against the standard picture, in which a memory is the exact pattern of connections. Steve Ramirez of Boston University, who was not involved, called it a substantial advance in understanding memory.

  17. 18

    Forgetting reframed as a fight between memories

    A review argues that much everyday forgetting is not erasure. The memories persist in a silent state, and what changes is which of them wins the right to be expressed through the cells that carry it. Memories compete, and the loser goes quiet rather than away. The authors set out how that framework covers ordinary forgetting and several conditions in which forgetting goes wrong. [14]

    Why it matters — If forgetting is competition rather than deletion, a memory that feels gone is still there to be reopened - which is exactly what the fly reminders did.

    Confident child witnesses, and a bad view

    The pristine conditions idea holds that a highly confident witness is a highly accurate one, and earlier work put confident children at 85 to 97 per cent accurate under good conditions. Researchers showed 1,055 people - 485 young children, 357 older children and 213 adults - a staged crime through a virtual reality headset, varying whether they saw it for six seconds or 34. Memory was weak across all three groups, in good conditions and poor. [23]

    Why it matters — Courts treat a confident identification as strong evidence. This is the condition under which that link comes apart, and it came apart for adults too.

    What actually tells you a witness is right

    Two studies looked for better signals than confidence alone. One found that confidence, how quickly the witness decided, and the language used to justify the choice each predicted accuracy on their own and worked best together; accurate witnesses used absolute language, inaccurate ones compared the faces against each other. The other trained evaluators on a simple scoring sheet and pitted them against an artificial intelligence model. The model won only modestly, and the scored evaluators beat those going on instinct. [24][29]

    Why it matters — Both point one way: the impression a confident witness makes is the weakest thing in the room, and a plain checklist recovers most of what instinct misses.

    What a witness means by fairly sure

    Witnesses and the people judging them attach different numbers to the same phrase. Researchers built a lexicon - a list of confidence phrases with the values people on average assign them - and replicated its structure across several samples and English-speaking countries. A second study found that describing a face beforehand improves accuracy and changes how closely confidence tracks it. A review shows confidence and accuracy can be pulled apart on purpose by changing the stimulus, the task or the brain. [27][25][28]

    Why it matters — A jury hears words, not percentages, and until now nobody had measured what those words are taken to mean.

    Cannabis users recalled fine and were sure when wrong

    One hundred and thirty-one people watched a staged crime over a video call and were interviewed with the Sketch Cognitive Interview, a method in which the witness draws the scene while describing it. Four groups were compared: regular cannabis users intoxicated both while watching and while recalling, users intoxicated only while recalling, sober users and sober non-users. Recall did not differ. Stronger feelings of intoxication went with more confidence in wrong identifications. [26]

    Why it matters — The interview method held up where the worry was. The damage showed up where nobody was looking - not in what people remembered, but in how sure they were of it.

    Older adults took the false detail more often

    Thirty adults aged about 70 and 30 aged about 23 were shown images of events, then given misleading written accounts of them, then tested twice - once in words, once in pictures. The older group reported more false memories on both tests, and were less consistent about their true memories across the two. When the original detail was the kind that grabs attention at the time, false memories were less likely in both groups. [19]

    Why it matters — Older people are often the witnesses in fraud and abuse cases, and this is precisely the interview pattern that produces the effect: a leading account, then repeated questioning.

    Warning people helps, and costs something

    Telling mock witnesses that misleading information might be coming reduced its effect, whether the warning arrived before or after the misinformation. Repeating the warning helped further - but it also made people doubt the parts of their memory that had never been contaminated. In six preregistered experiments, researchers compared refuting a false claim head-on with introducing a competing true one. Introducing the alternative changed attitudes more than the flat denial did. [22][72]

    Why it matters — Both findings say the same thing about corrections: contradicting a memory directly is the weakest move available, and doubt does not stay where you point it.

    Who takes the false detail, and why

    One study found large and stable differences between people in how much misinformation they absorb, and that stronger resting connections between the medial temporal lobe, a memory region, and the visual cortex went with better resistance. Another measured what people already knew using computer models trained on 639 billion words and 15 million images, and found prior knowledge shapes which false memories form - visual knowledge for pictures, verbal for words.     Why it matters — Being fooled is not carelessness or a character flaw. It tracks brain wiring and what a person already happens to know.

    Ten years of asking people about 11 September

    More than 3,000 people across seven US cities were asked what they remembered about learning of the attacks of 11 September 2001 - one week afterwards, then at 11 months and 35 months, and in a follow-up at ten years. Memory for where they were and who told them held up better than memory for the strong emotions they felt. The content stopped changing after about a year. [17][18]

    Why it matters — The flashbulb memory, named in 1977, is the case where certainty runs highest. The emotional part is the part that goes first, and the emotional part is what makes it feel like a recording.

    People remember feeling worse than they said

    Researchers compared what people reported feeling at the time with what they later recalled feeling, for two events: the attacks of 11 September 2001, with 769 people, and the Covid-19 pandemic, with 726. Both groups systematically recalled more intense bad feeling than they had originally described. In the pandemic group, those whose mood had improved most since showed the smallest distortion. A separate study found recalled thoughts and feelings survive worse than recalled events. [16][63][15]

    Why it matters — Your mood now is one of the things written in when the memory opens, which is how a bad stretch can feel worse the further you get from it.

    Voters recall predicting the result they wanted

    Three longitudinal studies followed people through three different national elections, asking beforehand what they expected and afterwards what they remembered expecting. What people recalled predicting drifted towards a version that flattered them and their side. The authors treat elections as memory catalysers: events people anticipate in detail, then remember the moment of learning about. [62]

    Why it matters — It is the same edit as the trauma case, running on politics, and it is why an argument about who called it right cannot be settled from memory.

    Going over a memory keeps it and adds to it

    Researchers in Paris ran a memory experiment built to be as close to real life as a laboratory allows, splitting people into a group who recalled their episodes over the following month and a group who did not. The reactivation group held on to the objective parts - what happened, where, when, and how those pieces stayed tied together. The same group also produced more false memories. Mental imagery and how personally relevant the event felt predicted what survived. [64]

    Why it matters — Going over a memory is what preserves the real details and what adds the false ones. This study measured both sides at once, in the same people.

  29. 30

    Why nobody remembers being a baby

    Almost nobody can recall the first few years of life, and memories before about age ten are sparse, partly because the hippocampus is still maturing. Nick Turk-Browne, a professor of psychology and neurosurgery at Yale University, says the live question is whether babies form memories they cannot later reach, or form none at all. A quarter-century review finds infants encode and retrieve far more than was once assumed, and that reminders can bring it back. [43][44][45]

    Why it matters — The common assumption that a blank childhood means something bad happened is, in the words of a therapist writing on it, unfounded - it is ordinary brain development.

    Wearing your child face brought childhood back

    Fifty adults took part in an online illusion in which they watched a digitally altered, child-like version of their own face move in time with their own movements. The synchrony made the face feel like their own. Those who felt ownership of the child face then recalled more detailed childhood episodes than those given an adult version of the same face. [46]

    Why it matters — It suggests the body you feel yourself to be in is part of the address a memory is filed under, which is an odd and checkable claim about how retrieval works.

  31. 32

    The best-known learning finding did not show up

    Retrieval practice - testing yourself instead of rereading - is among the most replicated findings in educational psychology. Two experiments ran it on Prolific, an online platform widely used for behavioural research, with validated materials, delayed tests and corrective feedback. Neither found a significant difference between testing and restudying. Separately, a meta-analysis found that 66 per cent of testing-effect studies cannot separate two distinct effects that have been treated as one. [47][48]

    Why it matters — A finding this established being hard to reproduce online, and partly mismeasured for years, matters because it is already what schools are told to do.

    Almost none of that research covered dyslexic learners

    An analysis of 23,850 publications on the testing effect found the field moving steadily out of the laboratory and into classrooms, while paying almost no attention to learners with learning disabilities. Taking dyslexia as its case, the paper argues there are theoretical reasons to doubt the benefit generalises to those learners, and that nobody has run the study that would check. [49]

    Why it matters — Retrieval practice is now recommended in schools. The learners it may suit least are the ones most likely to be told they simply need to try harder.

    How many rounds a flashcard actually needs

    One hundred and eight Chinese-English bilingual speakers learned 60 Swahili word pairs on digital flashcards, to test how the number of learning rounds changes the advantage of self-testing over rereading, and whether that advantage survives a change of test format. A separate study of episodic sentences found that giving the answer after a test carried the benefit across to material never tested - but only after repeated study, and only at short delay. [50][51]

    Why it matters — The advice to test yourself comes with conditions attached - how many rounds, what feedback, how long until the exam - and those conditions are only now being measured.

    Short videos, weaker recall, quieter brain

    Fifty-seven people watched either one continuous long video or a series of short ones matched for length and content, then had their memory tested inside a brain scanner. The short-video group recalled less. Their scans showed less activity in the claustrum, caudate nucleus and middle temporal gyrus, and a weaker link between the first two - regions involved in pulling information together. The size of the effect tracked how much short video each person normally watched. [53]

    Why it matters — It is one study of 57 people, and it is direct measurement rather than a survey, which is what this argument has mostly been conducted on.

    Cornell notes, and doing nothing afterwards

    One trial randomly assigned 134 trainee primary teachers to four note-taking methods - Cornell, parallel, digital and plain sentences - across five weeks. The trial measured what they retained, how motivated they were, and how much mental effort each method demanded. A separate study compared resting quietly for a few minutes straight after learning with going over the material again. Brief wakeful rest is known to help memory stick, but had never been tested head to head against the alternatives. [54][52]

    Why it matters — Both ask the unglamorous question underneath all study advice: not whether a method works, but whether it beats the other thing you could do with the same minutes.

    One kind of brain training, twenty years on

    The ACTIVE trial enrolled 2,802 adults aged 65 and over in 1998 and 1999 and randomly assigned them to memory training, reasoning training, speed-of-processing training, or no training. Each group had up to ten sessions of 60 to 75 minutes over five or six weeks, with a few booster sessions later. Twenty years on, only the speed group - rapid object-detection tasks - showed a lower rate of dementia diagnosis in US Medicare health records, 25 per cent lower. [60][61]

    Why it matters — The memory and reasoning groups showed no such link. That one arm moved and two did not is what makes it hard to dismiss, and hard to explain.

    The pills sold for memory, and what holds up

    Babak Tousi, a memory doctor at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, says the research on brain supplements is in its infancy and that there are safety concerns. The reviews disagree with each other. One narrative review of 19 studies reports daily multivitamins improving memory in older adults. A systematic review of creatine in people over 55 asks whether it does anything for thinking on its own. Omega-3 is sold on the grounds that the brain is roughly 60 per cent fat. A separate overview covers the drugs taken purely to sharpen thinking. [55][56][57][58][59]

    Why it matters — This is the commercial end of the day's subject: a very large market resting on findings the specialists themselves call immature.

    Hypnosis, and the memory wars

    Hypnosis has long been offered as a way to unlock buried memories of childhood abuse. Clinicians writing on it warn that what comes back under hypnosis is not reliably a recovered memory, because the questioning itself supplies material. The wider dispute, known as the memory wars, is still unsettled: most researchers hold that completely forgetting later-childhood trauma is rare, and that recovered memories are not always accurate.     Why it matters — It is the day's mechanism at its most dangerous. The technique opens the memory and then hands it the very details it is being asked to confirm.

    Memory trouble runs across psychiatric diagnoses

    A review pulled together evidence on memory in mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, post-traumatic and psychotic disorders. Two patterns showed up across all of them: weaker control of working memory, the small amount you hold in mind right now, and less specific recall of one's own past. Skills learned by doing - riding a bike, typing - were relatively spared. A separate study of Huntington's disease, an inherited brain disorder, found memory problems that were not the retrieval failures the field had assumed. [68][69]

    Why it matters — Memory keeps being damaged across diagnoses that have nothing else in common, which points at a shared mechanism rather than a symptom of any one of them.

    The people who remember every day

    Hyperthymesia, also called highly superior autobiographical memory, is a rare condition in which a person recalls the events of their daily life in vivid detail, going back to childhood, without trying. The recall is effortless rather than practised. The Cleveland Clinic's description notes the other side of it: memories that will not fade can be hard to live with. [70]

    Why it matters — It is the natural experiment for the whole subject. The people who cannot forget are not obviously better off than the people who can.

    The circuits that decide what a memory joins

    Three studies map the control layer above memory. In mice, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex was recruited over time to decide whether a new experience is linked to an old one, based on how similar the settings were. A second found that stress signals from the locus coeruleus, the brain's noradrenaline source, reach the amygdala and suppress the prefrontal cortex, blocking the unlearning of fear. A third reviews how memory retrieval depends on the state you were in when you learned. [65][66][67]

    Why it matters — All three describe the gate the memory-editing treatments have to get through, and the second explains why a stressed person is the hardest to treat.

You cannot look at a memory without changing it

Bringing a memory up is the same action as opening it for editing, so every time you use a memory you leave it a little different from how you found it.

The twist

The catch

Not every recall opens the memory. If nothing surprises you, the brain seems to leave it shut, and that resistance is the main reason these treatments work in rats and only sometimes in people.

And the whole of it

Everyone reading has a memory they would swear to, and the certainty comes from having gone over it many times, which is also how many times it has been rewritten. Nobody keeps an original to check the copy against.

03 Truth what's really going on

What is really going on

The idea that a memory can be reopened and edited works far better in animals than in people. A drug called ADX71743 wiped out a learned fear in rats, but only after the animal was made to recall it, and reminders planted false memories in fruit flies. In people, a pre-registered trial of the antibiotic doxycycline - aimed at a fresh trauma memory being laid down rather than an old one being reopened - found no difference between 39 women and 39 given a dummy pill. In 78 adolescents, the brain wiring shifted exactly as the theory predicts and the fear they reported stayed where it was. [4][11][10][3]

Why it works on us — Confidence is what everyone reads as proof, in a courtroom and in an argument, and confidence is built by how often a memory has been gone over rather than by how well the thing was seen. [23][24]

Who gains

  • Companies selling supplements for memory — The market runs on findings the reviewers themselves call immature, and the Cleveland Clinic's memory specialist says plainly that the data needed to recommend them does not exist. [55][56]
  • Ketamine clinics — A study of eight people pairing low-dose ketamine with EMDR reports large effects, and a single small result of that shape is enough to advertise on. [37]
  • Whoever is questioning a witness repeatedly — Each interview reopens the memory, and confidence rises across interviews whether or not accuracy does - in poor viewing conditions the two came apart entirely across 1,055 people. [23][24]
  • Trauma therapies already inside the guidelines — EMDR is listed as established by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and it holds that position while its own trial showed the eye movements may be replaceable. [30][36]
  • Researchers publishing on retrieval practice — 23,850 papers exist on the testing effect, and a meta-analysis finds two thirds of them measuring two effects as though they were one. [49][48]

Who pays

  • People with post-traumatic stress from prolonged childhood abuse — EMDR and cognitive behavioural therapy work less well for them, and the case reports that do help run to 30 and 50 sessions of stacked methods. [34][35][32]
  • Older people giving evidence — Thirty adults aged about 70 took the misleading detail into memory more often than 30 aged about 23, under exactly the repeat-questioning pattern police interviews use. [19]
  • Children identified as witnesses — Confident child witnesses were treated as 85 to 97 per cent accurate on earlier work; when 1,055 people were tested through a headset with a six-second view, memory was weak in every age group. [23]
  • Learners with dyslexia — Retrieval practice is now recommended in classrooms on the back of 23,850 studies that almost never included them, and there are theoretical reasons to doubt it transfers. [49]
  • Adults who cannot recall their childhood — They are widely told it means something bad happened; a therapist writing on childhood amnesia calls that assumption unfounded, and the sparse recall before about age ten is ordinary brain development. [43][45]
  • People whose memory of a bad stretch keeps getting worse — Across 769 people recalling 11 September 2001 and 726 recalling the pandemic, remembered feeling was more intense than reported feeling, and current mood shaped the gap. [16][63]

What nobody knows yet

    Whether a human memory can be reliably opened at all.

    The animal work depends on boundary conditions being overcome by surprise, and no human study here shows both the brain signal and the symptom moving together. The adolescent study got the wiring change without the fear change. [1][3]

  • 02

    What the eye movements in EMDR are for.

    Fifty volunteers doing an attention task with their eyes still improved as much as those doing the standard eye movements, in one small study of healthy people. The therapy is named after the part that may not be working. [36][30]

  • 03

    Whether the testing effect is one effect or two.

    A meta-analysis found 66 per cent of studies cannot separate the benefit to the tested material from the benefit to what is learned afterwards, and two online experiments found no benefit at all. [48][47]

  • 04

    Whether babies make memories they cannot reach, or make none.

    Nick Turk-Browne of Yale University names this as the open question after decades of work, and a quarter-century review finds infants encode far more than was assumed. [44][45]

    Whether a memory that comes back under hypnosis was ever there.

    The memory wars are still unsettled: most researchers hold that entirely forgetting later-childhood trauma is rare, and that what is recovered is not always accurate. Nobody has a way to check an individual case. [41][42]

    A narrative review of 19 studies reports multivitamins improving memory in older adults; the Cleveland Clinic's own memory specialist says the research is in its infancy and carries safety concerns. Both statements are on the record. [56][55][57]

    Why only speed training tracked less dementia.

    In a trial of 2,802 people, the memory and reasoning arms showed no link at twenty years and the rapid object-detection arm showed a 25 per cent lower diagnosis rate. Nobody has explained the mechanism. [60][61]

    What short video does to memory outside a scanner.

    The direct evidence is one study of 57 people, and the effect was correlated with habitual use, which cannot separate the cause from the people who already watch most. [53]

04 Hope carry this

The ACTIVE trial enrolled 2,802 adults aged 65 and over in 1998 and 1999 and gave some of them up to ten hour-long sessions of rapid object-detection training over five or six weeks. Twenty years later that group had a 25 per cent lower rate of dementia diagnosis in US Medicare health records.

Also true today

  • Mice put into an artificial hibernation lost more than half of the connections on the neurons carrying a memory. Five days later they still had the memory.
  • In children and adolescents with post-traumatic stress, EMDR produced a large reduction in symptoms against a waiting list, and matched trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, the treatment most guidelines put first.
  • At University Hospital Southampton in England, the EMERALD study found intensive-care survivors still living with frightening memories, offered them trauma therapy, and kept them in it.
