Low-Earth orbit is filling up, and this week the people who run it started saying so out loud.

At a July 29 industry panel, officials warned that the next wave of satellite networks will need real coordination to share orbit safely [1]. They are talking about constellations of tens of thousands of spacecraft - even, on paper, up to a million [1]. One startup, Starcloud, has filed plans for 88,000 satellites [1]. For scale, SpaceX’s Starlink, the biggest network flying, has only about 10,000 [1].

The problem is traffic. Operators already make hundreds of thousands of collision-avoidance moves a year [1]. In an orbit holding up to a million spacecraft, one analyst put the figure near half a billion moves a year [1].

The sky was never empty. About 750,000 pieces of debris larger than a centimetre already circle Earth at roughly 40,000 km/h [2]. Why sensible people overfill it

Here is the trap, and it is worth slowing down on. When you launch a satellite, you keep everything it earns.
