NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to launch on Sunday at 7:27 a.m. Eastern time. A SpaceX Falcon Heavy carries it from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

It carries a 2.4-metre mirror, the same width as Hubble's. A different curve lets it see about 100 times as much sky at once.

The mirror was a gift. A US spy agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, had built it for a satellite meant to look down at Earth.

Most of the first five years goes on three sweeps of the sky: exploding stars, a billion galaxies, and planets.

The catch
The passenger only reaches orbit if the host does, and the host's budget, schedule and destination are set by a job that does not care about it.

Almost nothing any of us relies on was paid for by someone trying to give it to us. The mirror was ground to watch a country, the money was voted for dark energy, and a camera that cannot see another Earth is riding along on both. Every one of us is somewhere in a chain like that, using the by-product of a decision made for reasons we will never hear.

What is really going on
Sunday's telescope was funded to measure dark energy. The instrument NASA most wants to prove rides along on it as an experiment, and that experiment was already cut back to save money.
Why it works on us — A launch is a date, a countdown and one machine you can photograph, which makes it easy to celebrate. A budget line is a category with no picture, which makes it easy to cut and hard to defend.
