Who is involved

Who is involved

Why it matters

Watch the price Microsoft sets for an extra hour.

Why it matters

It is the number that decides whether this is a cheap way in for people without a console or a bill for the people already streaming. [1][4]

How it works

What a meter takes first is the thing you were not sure about

How it works

Put a charge on each hour and people do not just play less. They stop risking an hour on a game they might not like.

How it works · step 1 of 6

With no meter, an extra hour costs the player nothing

How it works · step 2 of 6

So opening a game you might not like is free

How it works · step 3 of 6

Put a price on the hour and each one has to be worth it

How it works · step 4 of 6

A game you already want is easy to justify; a maybe is not

How it works · step 5 of 6

Total use falls a little, and trying falls a lot

How it works · step 6 of 6

The service keeps the people who were sure and loses the browsers

The twist

A price does not shrink a habit evenly. It removes the part the person was unsure about, because being unsure is exactly what a charge makes expensive.

The catch

Sometimes the uncertain use really is waste, and pricing it is the point.

The catch

The trouble is that nobody can tell in advance which uncertain hour was the one that found something.

The whole

Only about 4% of subscribers will see a warning about this.

The whole

The rest of us meet the same meter somewhere else, in a data plan or a ticket price or a charge per call, and what it takes is never a decision we remember making.

The whole

Microsoft can count the hours it saves. Nobody counts the games nobody opened.

What's really going on

A promise of unlimited streaming, made in 2020 when almost nobody streamed, is being withdrawn now that enough people do for it to cost Microsoft real money.

Who gains

It takes an uncapped cost out of a fixed subscription and gains a second thing to sell, because extra hours are bought separately. [1][3]

Who gains

From November they can buy hours without any subscription and stream games built for newer machines. [4][3]

Who gains

It limits how long one session runs but not how many you start, which leaves it the looser offer of the two. [1]

Who pays

Their monthly bill is unchanged and the thing they were using it for now runs out, unless they buy hours. [1]

Who pays

Streaming was the way around a $500 machine, and it is now the part of the subscription with a ceiling on it. [8][1]

Nobody knows yet

What an extra hour of cloud streaming will cost.

Microsoft announced the caps and the shop for extra hours without publishing a price or a date for it. [1]

Nobody knows yet

What Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs a month.

Ars Technica prices it at $23 a month. GameSpot reports that Xbox raised Ultimate to $30 a month on 1 October 2025. We could not reconcile the two figures. [1][9]

Nobody knows yet

How many Game Pass subscribers use cloud streaming at all.

Microsoft has published total hours and a growth rate but never a user count, and Ars Technica says the number is unclear. [1]

The whole story, in 13 parts ↓

Part 1 of 13 · Who else is involved

Part 1 of 13 · Who else is involved

Part 2 of 13

Game Pass Ultimate, at $23 a month, drops from unlimited streaming to 15 hours.

Part 2 of 13

Premium gets 10 hours and Essential gets 5. [1][2]

Part 3 of 13

Cloud gaming means the game runs on Microsoft's distant computers and is sent to your screen as video, so you need no console to play it. [1]

Part 4 of 13

Microsoft gave the reason plainly: the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer. [3]

Part 5 of 13

It also said what that means for the people affected.

Part 5 of 13

In its own words, for some players the practical result is a higher cost. [3]

Part 6 of 13

Downloading and playing the same games on your own console or PC is unchanged.

Part 6 of 13

Only the streaming is metered. [1]

Part 7 of 13

Subscribers who run out can buy extra playtime hours in the Xbox Store.

Part 7 of 13

Microsoft has not published what an hour will cost. [1][6]

Part 8 of 13

From November, people with no Game Pass subscription can also buy hours and stream games they already own. [4][3]

Part 9 of 13

Microsoft pitched that at owners of the older Xbox One, and at players in countries where a new Xbox is unavailable or unaffordable. [3]

Part 10 of 13

Microsoft says the caps will affect 4% of subscribers, and points out that most of them barely stream at all.

Part 10 of 13

Ars Technica puts the 4% at roughly 1.2 million people, against an estimated 30 million. [1][5][7]

Part 11 of 13

In 2020 Microsoft announced unlimited cloud streaming for Ultimate.

Part 11 of 13

In a 2023 US court filing it called cloud gaming a niche that had never achieved consumer demand beyond it. [1]

Part 12 of 13

Xbox says it streamed 500 million hours of games in its 2025 financial year, with usage up 45% on the year before. [1]

Part 13 of 13

Rivals meter differently.

Part 13 of 13

Sony's top PlayStation Plus tier streams with no time limit, and Nvidia's GeForce Now caps how long one session runs rather than the month. [1]

Epic's boss calls it the worst crash since the 1980s

Tim Sweeney, head of Epic Games, which makes Fortnite and the Unreal engine, told Edge magazine that AI data centres can outbid the whole entertainment industry for parts, and that memory and storage prices are quadrupling.

He expects a supply crisis for gaming hardware for three years. [10][11]

Why it matters

It is the same cost pressure Microsoft names for its servers, arriving at the other end as the price of a console.

Who pays

Memory and storage prices are quadrupling because AI data centres outbid them for the same parts. [10]

Nobody knows yet

How long the hardware squeeze lasts.

Tim Sweeney says three years and that new factories are the only fix. Nobody quoted alongside him put a date on when those factories open. [10][11]

Half the money in mobile games now comes from games rated for children

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

A Bloomberg study of the 100 highest-grossing games on Apple's US app store found that kid-rated games with surprise prizes took more than half of all revenue in 2024 and 2025.

No game rated 18-plus has been in the top ten since 2023. [12]

Why it matters

The design that once carried an adult rating is now mostly sold to children.

Microsoft moves Xbox in with search adverts and Windows

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Microsoft is cutting its reporting to two segments from late October.

Xbox joins Windows devices and search advertising in Devices and Consumer, while Azure, its cloud computing arm, is reported separately with quarterly revenue for the first time. [13]

Why it matters

Cloud gaming runs on the kind of machines that now sit in the other, more valuable half of the company.

Nobody knows yet

Whether Xbox stays a separate line once Microsoft's new reporting starts.

From late October Xbox sits inside a segment with Windows devices and search advertising, and Microsoft has not said what it will still break out. [13]

Rovio closes its Copenhagen studio

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Rovio, the Finnish maker of Angry Birds, is shutting its Copenhagen office after cancelling Sonic Blitz, a mobile Sonic game. About 20 people worked on it.

Its chief executive said players did not keep coming back. [14]

Why it matters

Sega paid $776m for Rovio in 2023 and has already written $200m of that off.

Who pays

Rovio is closing the studio after cancelling the game they were working on. [14]

Nobody knows yet

How many people lose their jobs at Rovio in Copenhagen.

The studio said the redundancy process is still running and would not confirm a figure; about 20 people worked on the cancelled game. [14]

A hit indie studio turns itself into a publisher

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Aggro Crab, the small studio behind the climbing game Peak, has launched a label to fund other people's games.

It will back projects needing $500,000 or less, says it will not publish work made with generative AI, and will not hold back the final payment before release. [15][16][17]

Why it matters

Peak passed 20 million players, and the studio chose to widen its catalogue rather than its payroll.

Who gains

It converts a 20-million-player hit into a publishing label instead of a larger payroll it would have to keep paying. [15]

Nobody knows yet

What Aggro Crab's publishing deals actually pay a developer.

The studio described flexible milestones and said it will not take everything back before paying out, but published no revenue split. [15]

A studio dropped by Amazon says it is fine

Glowmade, based in Guildford in England, had its multiplayer game King of Meat shut down by Amazon this year.

Its studio head, Jonny Hopper, called the split amicable and says the company has a team, money in the bank and financial independence. [18]

Why it matters

Losing a publisher usually ends in layoffs or closure, and this time it did not.

Xbox's boss says AI raised the price of her own consoles

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Asha Sharma told the BBC it is wonderful that graphics chips have more uses in the world, even though Microsoft's own AI push helped push console prices up.

The cheapest Xbox now costs $500, against $300 at launch in 2020. [8]

Why it matters

The same company sits on both sides of the shortage.

CD Projekt Red will keep making boxes after discs end

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Sony stops producing physical PlayStation discs in January 2028.

Michal Nowakowski of CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio behind The Witcher, says platform owners control disc manufacturing, so a box may hold a download code instead.

Saber Interactive's Tim Willits said he was surprised how upset people were. [19][20]

Why it matters

The collector's edition survives the disc; what you own inside it changes.

CD Projekt Red is not worried about a delayed next console

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Asked about rumours that the next generation of consoles will slip, Nowakowski said consoles are here to stay and that content is what matters.

He said pricing is the objective challenge. [21]

Why it matters

The studio is planning for a world where the box gets more expensive, not cheaper.

Hamburg's games fund asks who used a machine

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Gamecity Hamburg opened a second round of prototype funding.

Applicants must submit a playable prototype, cover at least 20% of eligible costs themselves, and state whether generative AI will be used. [22]

Why it matters

Public money is starting to ask the question as a form field rather than an argument.

Activision, the publisher of Call of Duty, sent a legal representative to the home of a known cheat maker, filmed the visit and posted it on the game's official account.

It says it has disrupted 375 reseller operations so far. [24]

Why it matters

Enforcement is being used as marketing to the players who stayed.

A Steam study puts numbers on which games pay

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

A revenue report covering over 100,000 Steam games estimates that 27.3% of games tagged sandbox have made more than $100,000, the highest rate of any tag.

Hidden object games manage 5.4%. Baldur's Gate 3 is estimated at $1.79bn; a climbing game released in March at $34. [25]

Why it matters

The estimates use review counts rather than Valve's own sales data, so treat the levels as rough and the gaps as real.

Nobody knows yet

How much of the Steam revenue picture is real.

The study estimates sales from review counts rather than Valve's own data, so the ranking is firmer than any single number in it. [25]

The studio says it will keep running both earlier Guild Wars games for years. [28]

Why it matters

Sequels in this genre usually arrive by switching the previous game off.

Investors asked a Dishonored maker about NFTs

Harvey Smith and Ben Horne, who left Arkane after Microsoft closed its Austin studio in 2024, spent a year looking for money for their new studio, Black Pony Immersive.

They say investors asked about NFTs, AI, and returns of a thousand times in two years. [29]

Why it matters

It is a plain account of what the money on offer to a new studio currently wants.

Ghost of Yotei adds a bounty-hunting mode

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Sony released a trailer for Most Wanted, a mode for Ghost of Yotei in which players take bounties, hunt targets and unlock characters.

It arrives on 1 October with the Complete Edition upgrade. [30]

Why it matters

Single-player games are being extended by modes that reset, rather than by sequels.

DayZ's creator says he may never solve it

Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓

Dean Hall, who made the DayZ mod fourteen years ago, told PC Gamer that survival games get boring in the endgame and the only known fix is brute force, meaning heaps of content.

Why it matters

Most games that launch this badly are switched off rather than repaired.
