Garry Newman says s&box's launch failed, and Facepunch will drop its no-neck character
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
Garry Newman, who founded Facepunch, the studio behind the hit games Garry's Mod and Rust, says the launch of its new game s&box went badly.
It was sold as the next Garry's Mod, for a world where Roblox is king.
Who is involved
Garry Newman
the founder of Facepunch and maker of Garry's Mod; he admitted the s&box launch failed
Who is involved
Facepunch Studios
the British studio behind Garry's Mod, Rust and s&box
Why it matters
Watch whether the human characters and the change to Playfund, both promised within about a month, bring Garry's Mod players back to s&box.
What's really going on
Facepunch built s&box to live on games its players make, and after five months its founder says about 20 good games there are lost among 500 tech demos and clickers.
Why it works on people
A founder who says plainly that his launch failed sounds trustworthy, and that makes it easy to forget that none of the fixes he lists has happened yet.
Who gains
Eridium, the YouTuber
Newman says he is more useful to Facepunch as an outside critic and asked him to keep calling the studio out.
Who pays
Makers of tech demos and clickers on s&box
Facepunch is changing Playfund so it stops encouraging their games.
Nobody knows yet
What Playfund pays for, and how it will change.
Newman says it has been encouraging tech demos and clickers, but gives no detail of the change.
Nobody knows yet
How many people play s&box.
Neither Newman nor PC Gamer gives a player count, only that it has struggled for five months.

Part 1 of 12 · Who else is involved
Eridium
a YouTuber who covers s&box closely; his critical video drew Newman's reply
Part 2 of 12
s&box is a platform where players make games and share them, like Roblox, and it has struggled through its first five months on sale.
Part 3 of 12
On 4 October Newman answered Eridium, a YouTuber who covers s&box, whose latest video said a free-to-play weekend was not enough to fix it.
Part 4 of 12
Newman wrote that both the launch and the free weekend failed, and that they turned many Garry's Mod players against s&box.
Part 5 of 12
Facepunch will drop the citizen, s&box's own character with no neck, and switch to human characters over the next month or so.
Part 6 of 12
Most players do not like the citizen, Newman says.
Part 6 of 12
Facepunch had already given it a neck on 29 September, because the complaint kept coming up in bad reviews.
Part 7 of 12
Newman says he kept the citizen partly because of the time already put into it, and he calls that a sunk cost fallacy.
Part 8 of 12
He says s&box has about 20 good games lost among 500 tech demos and clickers, meaning small test projects and simple clicking games.
Part 9 of 12
Facepunch will change Playfund, a scheme on s&box that Newman says has been encouraging those games.
Part 10 of 12
Instead of showing each player 200 games to pick from, s&box will move to a system where players subscribe to a game and install it.
Part 11 of 12
Newman said he will not hire Eridium, because the YouTuber is more useful to Facepunch as an outside critic.
Part 12 of 12
Facepunch's older game Rust got its October update on 1 October, adding cows and sheep.
Part 12 of 12
PC Gamer notes that money from two earlier hits did not promise Facepunch a third.

Take-Two stops a fan's GTA 5 Switch port
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
A modder called Mojso has cancelled an unofficial version of Grand Theft Auto 5 for Nintendo's Switch, days before it was due out.
Mojso says Take-Two, which owns Rockstar, the studio behind GTA, sent a letter demanding a stop.
Rockstar had recently changed its rules for fans to ban moving its games to other machines.
The group behind the port closed on 3 October.
Why it matters
Take-Two's letter came about a week after that challenge, and Mojso says he would most likely lose in court.
Why it matters
He says he cannot share the code either, because that could also bring a lawsuit.
What's really going on
Across the rest of the day, fans kept building on games they do not own, and Take-Two, which owns GTA, stopped one of them with a letter, by the modder's own account.
Who gains
Take-Two
One letter ended an unofficial Switch version of GTA 5 days before release, with no court case.
Who pays
Players waiting for Mojso's GTA 5 port
It will not be released, and he says he cannot hand the code to anyone else.
Nobody knows yet
What Take-Two's letter to Mojso said.
Only Mojso has described it, and he says he cannot share his code or files.

Warzone lets players hide other games' skins
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision's free battle game, will let players switch off character outfits, called skins, that come from other Call of Duty games.
It starts with the first season of Modern Warfare 4, which comes out on 23 October.
Since 2020 Warzone has collected hundreds of skins, including tie-ins with TV shows such as American Dad and The Boys.
Why it matters
A big reason people buy a skin is that other players see it, Eurogamer notes, which is why few expected a switch like this.
Why it matters
Nobody in a match can tell who has turned the skins off.
How it works
Why work already done is a poor reason to keep going
How it works
Facepunch kept s&box's no-neck character for five months, partly for the work already in it, though most players disliked it.
How it works · step 1 of 6
A team puts months of work into something
How it works · step 2 of 6
Players turn out not to like it
How it works · step 3 of 6
That work cannot be got back, whatever comes next
How it works · step 4 of 6
But the team still counts it, and keeps going
How it works · step 5 of 6
Each month it stays, the cost grows
How it works · step 6 of 6
Only the months ahead should decide
The twist
Facepunch has already spent its work on the citizen, and neither keeping nor dropping the character gets that work back.
The twist
So the work should not decide the choice, yet it helped keep the character for five months.
The picture
The work on the citizen is the same on both sides. Only what happens next month is different, so only that can decide.
Seen the same day
Players' hours already spent on their characters decide what Blizzard does next, so a broken item stays for the season.
Seen the same day
Six years of skins that players paid for stay in Warzone, so Activision adds a switch that hides them rather than removing any.
Seen the same day
Its producer does the sum the other way: he counts the games he has left before retiring, not the work in the old one.
The catch
Past work does count when it still gives something today: Blizzard keeps the Diablo 4 item because players enjoy the characters they built with it now.
The whole
Everyone in today's stories had work behind them: Facepunch with its character, Diablo players with their builds, Mojso with his port.
The whole
Each of them could count the work already done much more easily than the months still to come.
Who gains
Warzone players who dislike tie-in skins
The new switch hides skins from other Call of Duty games on their own screen.
Who pays
Buyers of tie-in skins in Warzone
Players with the switch on will no longer see the skin they paid for.
Nobody knows yet
How many Warzone players will switch other games' skins off.
The switch changes only what one player sees, and nobody else in a match can tell who uses it.

Blizzard leaves a Diablo 4 bug in place
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
Blizzard will not fix the biggest bug in Diablo 4's current season, which lets players wear one more powerful charm than the game allows.
The bug comes from a new item called the Hellfire Torch.
Design director Dan Tanguay said many players had spent a lot of time earning it and building characters around it.
Blizzard also sent a rare crafting item to players as an apology for a launch delayed by server problems.
Why it matters
Changing a game in the middle of a season can wipe out hours players have already put in, so Blizzard waits.
Why it matters
Diablo 4 gets no more expansions as Blizzard moves to Diablo 5.

Paradox bans modern leaders in profile pictures
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
Paradox, the Swedish maker of the war strategy game Hearts of Iron 4, is banning profile pictures of political or military figures born after 1800 on its Discord chat server.
It follows a row after a moderator banned someone for using a photo of Ataturk, who founded modern Turkey.
Game director Laszlo Pieper wrote that Paradox handled the matter poorly.
Why it matters
Pieper says a fixed date leaves moderators no room for judgement calls about any one figure.
Why it matters
He also says staff received open threats, and anyone banned for sending them will stay banned.
Who gains
Paradox's Discord moderators
A fixed 1800 cut-off means they no longer judge each historical figure one by one.
Who pays
Paradox Discord members with modern figures as profile pictures
They will have seven days to change them once the rule goes live.

A fan group called Luma's Workshop says it has fully decompiled Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo's 2007 game for the Wii.
Decompiling means working backwards from the finished game to rebuild its code, so it can run directly on a PC instead of in an emulator that pretends to be a Wii.
The group calls the project AstroCore and says a release is coming soon.
Why it matters
Nintendo now sells Super Mario Galaxy on its own Switch, so a free PC version would sit beside a game it still sells.
