BioWare made the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.
Three doctors founded it in 1995.
Who is involved
Electronic Arts (EA)
a big US games publisher, maker of EA Sports FC and Battlefield; it closed BioWare and is cutting about 400 jobs
Who is involved
BioWare
a role-playing game studio in Edmonton, Canada, owned by EA since 2007; it made Mass Effect and Dragon Age and is now closed
Why it matters
Watch whether EA sells Mass Effect and Dragon Age to another studio or shelves them, and whether more job cuts follow, since the staff letter did not rule them out.
What's really going on
The group that bought EA paid $55 billion, much of it borrowed, and promised $700 million a year in savings.
What's really going on
Closing BioWare and cutting about 400 jobs is part of finding that money, while EA keeps the games that earn every year, such as EA Sports FC, Battlefield and Apex Legends.
Why it works on people
A letter about putting 'talent and investments' where the 'greatest opportunities' are makes a cut to pay for a loan sound like a choice about which games are best.
Who gains
The investors who bought EA
Money saved on closed studios and cut jobs goes toward the $700 million a year promised to them.
Who pays
BioWare's last staff
About 50 people lost their jobs, along with about 350 elsewhere at EA.
Nobody knows yet
Whether EA sells Mass Effect and Dragon Age, or shelves them.
EA owns both, and its former producer Mark Darrah says either is possible while EA is cutting costs.
Nobody knows yet
Where the other 350 EA jobs are.
Bloomberg's total comes from one unnamed person, and EA has published no list; GameSpot names Maxis among the studios hit.
Nobody knows yet

The staff letter neither announced nor ruled out further layoffs.
Nobody knows yet
What DICE and Respawn are making together.
EA said only 'a future project'. Bloomberg says it is likely a Star Wars Battlefront, and EA has not confirmed that.

Fortnite, Epic Games' hugely popular online game, is back on Apple's App Store in Australia.
Australia's Federal Court ruled that Apple broke competition law by blocking rival app stores and other ways to pay.
From 1 March 2027, Apple must let people download apps straight from developers, and let developers take payments without extra Apple fees.
Apple says it will ask for a pause and appeal.
Why it matters
Epic has fought Apple over its store rules since 2020, and Australia was the last country where Fortnite stayed off iPhones after May.

Packs cost $3.99 for 10 hours, $7.99 for 25 and $11.99 for 50, and do not run out.

Sony updates the PS5 as hackers race GTA 6
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
Sony released PS5 system update 14.20 on 21 October, saying only that it improved some screens.
Hackers have been breaking into older PS5 software so the console runs games it should not, including pirated ones.
Some games already need update 14.00, from 16 September, to download their own patches.
A hacker called Ark Sama says 14.20 fixes a flaw they reported to Sony, so they may now publish it.
Why it matters
That flaw will still work on any PS5 that has not been updated.
Why it matters
Some in the hacking scene expect GTA 6 to need 14.20, which would push millions of players to update before 19 November.
How it works
Why a hit game is what gets millions of machines updated
How it works
People skip system updates that give them nothing, so makers tie the update to a game everyone wants, and the game does the persuading.
How it works · step 1 of 6

How it works · step 6 of 6
Only people who prefer the old version hold out
The twist
Almost nobody updates a machine for its own sake. They update when the game they want will not start without it.
The picture
Sony's two newest PS5 updates, and the day the year's biggest game arrives. Some games already need 14.00 to get their own patches.
Seen the same day
Some games already refuse to download their patches on PS5 software older than 14.00, and hackers expect GTA 6 to ask for 14.20.

Modern Warfare 4's online modes will not start until a PC has Secure Boot and new enough chip firmware, so players update start-up software some left alone for years.
Seen the same day
The shorter wait in Gears of War and Modern Warfare 4 comes only with the Xbox PC app installed, even for games bought on Steam.
The catch
It only works while the game is truly wanted. Players who value the old version more, like the PS5 hackers, skip the game and keep the machine as it is.
The whole
Someone updating their PC on Friday to play Call of Duty is also making it harder for cheat software to run on it, and may never know.
The whole
Sony, Activision and Microsoft each decide a little of what millions of machines run, and the owners mostly find out on launch day.

Call of Duty online needs a security check
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on PC this Friday, and its online modes need two security features switched on.
One is TPM 2.0, which checks that a computer started up cleanly. The other is Secure Boot, which lets only signed start-up software run.
Some older chip firmware will not pass, so players must update the motherboard's BIOS, its basic start-up software.
Why it matters
Activision, the game's publisher, uses these checks to keep cheat software out of online matches, as Battlefield 6 did.
Why it matters
The game's DMZ mode opened early to buyers, and a spawn point on a road already gets some players run over at once.

Nvidia's new graphics driver, 621.01, supports Advanced Shader Delivery, a Microsoft system that prepares a game's graphics code in the cloud.

For now only Gears of War: E-Day and Modern Warfare 4 use it.
