The NFL suspends 49ers owner Jed York for six games and fines him $500,000, the same punishment it gave the Colts' owner in 2014

The NFL, American football's top league, suspended Jed York, the main owner of the San Francisco 49ers, for six regular-season games on Friday.
three of them had already been played when it was announced
Who is involved
Jed York
the main owner of the San Francisco 49ers since 2024 and the club's boss since 2008; suspended for six games
Who is involved
Roger Goodell
the NFL's commissioner, its chief executive; he agreed a four-year contract extension last month
Why it matters
Watch whether the NFL says what York may still do at the 49ers before 20 October, and whether the players' union compares his ban with players' bans.
What's really going on
The NFL punished 49ers owner Jed York with the same six games and $500,000 it gave Colts owner Jim Irsay in 2014, and half of the ban had passed before it was announced.
Why it works on people
A ban counted in games sounds heavy, but three of York's six games had already gone by when it was announced.
Who gains
Jed York
The three games he had already stayed away for count as served, so he can be back for the NFL's league meetings on 20 October.
Nobody knows yet
What York may still do at the 49ers during his ban.
The NFL did not say what part, if any, he may play in running the club until 20 October.
Nobody knows yet
Whether a player in York's place would get the same.
The same conduct policy covers players, and the players' union had not answered when asked.
Nobody knows yet
How much York agreed to pay in the police sting.
The Athletic and the Guardian say $160.

Manchester City lodge their appeal
Swipe up for the story ↑Scroll down for the story ↓
Manchester City, the Premier League club owned by Sheikh Mansour of Abu Dhabi, lodged its appeal at 7pm on Thursday against the verdict on its finances.
An independent panel found City broke Premier League money rules on all but one of 114 charges, covering 2009 to 2018.
It found City disguised more than 830m pounds of funding, partly through sponsorship deals the panel called sham contracts.
The Football Association, which runs English football as a whole, said the case has serious implications for the game.
Why it matters
City is expected to argue that Abu Dhabi's government, not its owner, paid for the sponsorship deals.
Why it matters
Its main sponsor, the airline Etihad, told the US government in 2015 that this was false.
How it works
Who gets to punish the people who own the league
How it works
When a league has to punish one of its own club owners, its boss answers to those owners, so it reaches for the punishment it gave last time.
How it works · step 1 of 5
A league's commissioner answers to the clubs he governs
How it works · step 2 of 5
When an owner breaks the rules, the commissioner must punish one of the people he answers to
How it works · step 3 of 5
Matching an earlier case is the punishment hardest to call unfair, so the league copies it
How it works · step 4 of 5
Where there is no earlier case, or no appeal, sport hands the case to an outside panel
How it works · step 5 of 5
The result then depends on which case came first and who sits on the panel
The twist
The NFL gave York exactly the punishment it gave Jim Irsay in 2014.
The twist
When a league's boss must punish one of the clubs he answers to, an old case is the safest measure to use.
The picture
Twelve years apart, two NFL owners got exactly the same punishment from the league.
Seen the same day
The Premier League handed City's case to an independent panel instead of judging it alone, and City is now appealing against that panel's verdict.
Seen the same day
Carse's employer, the England and Wales Cricket Board, is not acting against him; a separate regulator charged him and an independent committee will decide.
Seen the same day
The NFL marks its own referees' work in private, and its rules say clubs may be punished for revealing the answer.
Seen the same day
The new commissioner said the schools decide, because he reports to them.
The catch
An outside panel is only as independent as the people who choose it.
The catch
Copying an old case also copies its mistakes, like a case that never got a punishment at all.
The whole
The owners, the commissioner, the players under the same policy and the fans who buy tickets are all inside this system.
The whole
A fan sees the six games and the fine, but not the league's discussion that settled on them.
Nobody knows yet
Whether Manchester City's new defence will hold.
City is expected to argue that Abu Dhabi's government paid for its sponsorship deals.
Nobody knows yet
When City's appeal will be heard, and what the punishment will be.
The appeal was lodged on Thursday and no date or sanction has been published.

American college football's play-off may double from 12 teams to 24, possibly from 2027.
Its leaders can talk about the price only with ESPN, the sports TV channel that holds the rights, until 9 October.
ESPN's current deal covers a play-off of up to 14 teams, so a 24-team field would create new games to sell.
The play-off's director, Rich Clark, said the TV value is the main missing piece, and the deadline to decide is 1 December.
