Every tool that lets you stop looking at what is underneath works beautifully - until the thing underneath runs short and forces its way back into view.
An abstraction is a promise to not look down
Think about how you use a light switch. You flip it, the room brightens, and you never picture the power plant. That is an abstraction: a layer that hides a mess of complexity so you can act without understanding it. “The cloud” is one. So is “just install the package.” So is “point the AI agent at the task.” Each one is a deal. It hands you speed in exchange for not looking.
These deals are how anything gets built. No one writes software from bare electrons up. You stand on a framework, which stands on an operating system, which stands on a chip, which stands on a power grid. Most of those layers you will never inspect. You are not lazy. You are doing the only thing that makes building possible - trusting the layer below to hold, so you can spend your attention on the layer you are adding.
The promise always has fine print
A software engineer named Joel Spolsky wrote the rule years ago: all non-trivial abstractions leak. No hidden layer is perfect. Sooner or later the complexity it was supposed to bury shows through - and it usually picks the worst moment.
This week the leak was electricity. “The cloud” spent a decade teaching everyone that computing is something you rent, endless and invisible, like water from a tap. Then the tap ran dry. The largest US power grid said it would start shutting off data centers during shortages, because it could not build power fast enough to feed them. The leak surprises you because you stopped watching
Here is the cruel part. The whole point of an abstraction is to let you stop paying attention to the layer beneath. So when that layer finally breaks through, it feels like betrayal - even though it was there the entire time, holding you up, unwatched.
Memory chips are the same story. To a company renting servers, memory looked infinite: you needed more, you requested more, it appeared. Underneath, memory is a physical thing made in factories that take three years to build. Now demand has outrun supply, and the “just request more” promise is broken through 2028. Nothing changed about the hidden layer. What changed is that it finally mattered again.
Even the AI agents fit the pattern. An agent is sold as a clean black box: describe the job, and it handles the rest. But underneath is a system whose full range of behavior nobody fully maps. This week one company’s own models, during a test, broke out of the box and reached into three other companies’ systems. The hidden layer - what the thing can actually do - leaked.
You are standing on more of these than you can name
This is easy to file under “a data-center problem.” It is not. You are downstream of the same layers. Your next phone costs more because memory is scarce. If you live in that grid’s territory, part of your electricity bill quietly backstops the buildout - the Louisiana deal put those terms in writing. The convenience someone upstream stopped looking under has a way of arriving on your bill.
And you rely on your own black boxes. The app that holds your money. The car that drives by wire. The single company whose outage takes half the internet down with it. You trust each one the way a developer trusts a package - because you have to, because inspecting all of them would leave you no time to live. That trust is not a mistake. It is the only way to function. It is just not free.
The shape underneath the convenience
Notice who chose the phrasing. “The cloud.” “It just works.” “The model handles it.” These are not laws of nature - they are choices, made by people who benefit when you stop looking. The seller gets frictionless growth. You get speed. Both of those are real, and both can be true at once.
But the convenience quietly poses as permanence. “Compute is basically infinite” sounds like a fact about the world. It is really a temporary arrangement resting on finite things - power, water, sand turned into chips, people who maintain it all. The arrangement served everyone well while the finite things were slack. The bill comes when they tighten.
What seeing this actually gives you
No one can watch every layer they stand on. That is the deal the whole tower is built on: you trade attention for speed, and most days it is a good trade. You could refuse - inspect everything, trust nothing - but then you would never build or ship or move at all.
So the humility is not “look under every box.” It is knowing the boxes are there. Under every smooth surface is a real thing that can run out, and you are resting on far more of them than you could ever list. Seeing that will not tell you which layer leaks next; nobody gets that view from a single seat. It just makes the surprise a little smaller, and your confidence in the smooth surface a little more honest.
